  • Innovation will be outsourced
    • In recent years, firms are hard pressed for R&D dollars – these companies are looking at outsourcing their R&D
    • Outsourcing R&D also means innovation has to be outsourced
    • For R&D outsourcing to be successful, company which is outsourcing and their outsourcing partners must work together
    • This presentation talks about things that must be done to succeed with outsourced R&D
  • Players in the Game
    • Its clear that there will be at least two players – the company which is outsourcing the work (Initiator) & the company which is performing the outsourced work (Service provider)
    • In addition, there are hidden players. These typically include:
      • CFO of the Initiator
      • Chief Engineer/Scientist of the Initiator
      • Account Manager/BDM of Service provider
      • Project Manager of Service Provider
      • Stake holders of both organizations
  • Cultural Issues
    • Every organization will have a unique organizational culture
    • Cutting edge R&D is often run by Virtuoso teams which typically have:
      • Frenetic rhythm
      • High intensity of work
      • Emanate a discernible energy
      • Sometimes egocentric, temperamental, too elitist & difficult to work with
    • Bringing a diverse set of people together is a management challenge
