    2. Taking Weight to extremes
      People spend a lot of time worrying about weight, and get carried away and lose to much weight
      Some even have underlying psychological problems that require professional treatment.
      Eating disorder-Extreme and damaging eating behaviors that can lead to sickness and even death
    3. Anorexia Nervosa
      Many theories about the specific causes of anorexia nervosa, but experts agree that the disorder is related to how an individual sees her-self and to her ability to cope with everyday stresses.
      Anorexia Nervosa-Is an eating disorder characterized by self-starvation leading to extreme weight loss. Anorexia means “without appetite” and Nervosa means “of nervous origin”.
      Is a psychological disorder affecting the mind and the body. Caused by
      outside pressures, high expectations, need to achieve, or need to be popular.

    4. Bulimia
      People with bulimia are extremely concerned about being thin and beautiful; disorder grows out of their desire to control their bodies.
      Bulimia- is a condition in which people repeatedly eat large amounts of food and then try to get rid of the food they have eaten.
      Laxatives- make food speed through the digestive system with little time to release nutrients.
    5. How Bulimia damages the body
      Stomach acids from frequent vomiting can damage teeth and injure the mouth and throat
      Starvation can damage the heart
      Overeating can cause the stomach to enlarge. Vomiting can cause the stomach to rupture
      Laxative abuse can damage the kidneys
      Vomiting can lead to serious dehydration or drying out of the body. Emptying the body of nutrients can cause malnutrition
    6. Over Eating and Obesity
      People overeat for a variety of different reasons, including boredom, stress, and habit
      Obesity- Being 20 percent or more than your desired weight.
      Being to being Obese and cause health problems. Excessive body fat puts a strain on the heart and lungs
      Risks include
      high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, heart disease, and even cancer. Can also lead to low self esteem or even to psychological and social problems.

    7. Factors Contributing to Obesity
      Inherited tendency toward Obesity
      Overeating
      Family food habits
      Cultural attitudes
      Food as a reward
      Lack of physical activity
      Individual body metabolism- rate which body changes nutrients into energy and tissue

    8. Help for people with Eating Disorders
      People with eating disorders rarely get better on their own because they do not have a realistic view of themselves.
      Convince the person to get help- A person with an eating disorder may not be aware of the seriousness of the condition
      Tell an adult- The school nurse, a counselor, parents, or another adult must know about the problem so that the person will get the help needed
    9. Help with Eating Disorders Cont.
      Get professional help- A person with an eating disorder has a psychological problem and requires professional help. Sometimes other family members are also encouraged to meet with the counselor
      Encourage the person to join a support group- A support group can offer important support and encouragement to a person with an eating disorder
      Recommend a follow-up- People who are treated for eating disorders may need to return for follow-up visits to be sure that the problem does not recur.
