In the afternoon yellow September sunlight,
A few leaves yellowing,all it`s seeds fallen.

    • The Laburnum top is silent,quiet still
    • In the afternoon yellow September sunlight,
    • A few leaves yellowing,all it`s seeds fallen
  • 3.
    • Till the goldfinch comes,with a twitching chirrup
    • A suddenness,a startlement ,at a branch end
    • Then sleek as a lizard,and alert and abrupt,
  • 4.
    • She enters the thickness and a machine starts up
    • Of chitterings,and a tremor of wings,and trillings
    • The whole tree trembles and thrills
    • It is the engine of her family
  • 5.
    • She stokes it full,then flirts out to a branch-end showing her barred face identity mask
  • 6.
    • Then with eerie delicate whistle-chirrup whisperings
    • She launches away,towards the infinite
    • And the laburnum subsides to empty
  • 7. SUMMARY The Laburnum Top is silent & quiet in the month of September.During this time,the leaves turn yellow & all it`s seeds fall. The tree remains standstill,till the goldfinch comes to settle on it.The bird creates a chirping sound & it shows sudden movement like a lizard.The goldfinch enters the thick stem of the root & movement of wings causes the whole tree to tremble.
  • 8. The goldfinch is the engine of the laburnum family. After reaching there the bird gives out strong & delicate whistle.Then she flies away to the infinite.The laburnum tree again suffers loneliness & returns back to silence

  • 17. ABOUT THE POET Edward James Hughes (17 August 1930-28 October 1998) was an English poet andchildren`s writer, known as Ted Hughes . Critics routinely rank him as one of the best poets of his generation. Hughes was British Poet Laurete from 1984 until his death. Ted Hughes was married from 1956-63 to the American poet Sylvia Plath, who committed suicide in 1963 at the age of 30.
  • 18. His part in the relationship became controversial, particularly to some feministsand (particularly) US admirers of Plath, who even accused him of murder.Hughes himself never publicly entered the debate, but his last
  • 19. poetic work, Birthday Letters (1998), explored their complex relationship, and to many, put him in a significantly better light.In 2003 he was portrayed by British actor Daniel Craig in Sylvia, a biographical film of Sylvia Plath.
