  • 7. Calacanis Comment and Stats
    • Calcanis has repeatedly said the Mahalo model is NOT based on being well-indexed in Google or Yahoo
    • Nearly 75% of Mahalo traffic is from Google.
  • 8. Key Points from Video
    • Create products that don’t contribute to Internet pollution (Spam)
    • Disclose affiliate links
    • Reduce anonymity > raise accountability
    • Must police our system
  • 9. Search Engine Spam
    • Google's leaked documents defining spam state: When trying to decide if a page is Spam, it is helpful to ask yourself this question: if I remove the scraped (copied) content, the ads, and the links to other pages, is there anything of value left? if the answer is no, the page is probably Spam.
    • Yahoo defines spam as "pages created deliberately to trick the search engine into offering inappropriate, redundant, or poor-quality search results."
    • Bottom line: A spam site is one which uses techniques in a determined manner to subvert the search engine's algorithms, to artificially inflate their search engine rankings. (http://searchenginewatch.com)
  • 10. Example of Spam?
    • mahalo.com/Best_Computer_Speakers
  • 11. Banning Affiliate Links
    • Almost every post on calacanis.com has a link to mahalo.com
    • calacanis.com has a page rank of 6 in Google > so each link to mahalo.com is passing a page with heavy weight
    • Helps push Mahalo up in Google ranks
    • Links should have no follow attribute
  • 12. Mahalo is a SEO Play
    • Capitalizing on SEO referral traffic while a term is hot
    • Mahalo knows Google has changed ranking methods yet continue to create pages with “hot terms” so they rank well
    • Could block SE referral traffic but does not
  • 13. Thoughts of Others
    • “ Mahalo is a total SEO play. It has nothing to do with new technology. It’s a monetized Wikipedia, based around top queries.”
    • “ Walking a thin line between spam and added value.”
    • “ Nothing wrong with SEO play – just admit it.”
  • 14. In Closing
    • Think Mahalo is very cool concept
    • Probably won’t use majority of Mahalo facets
    • Mahalo should concentrate on getting main search pages complete instead of extras
    • Disappointed with majority of my search results
    • More likely to use something like stumbleupon
    • Don’t care for Jason Calacanis’ arrogance, peer bashing, or hard-sell
