Editor's Notes
5 minutes for this
15 minutes? This is a Wordle of the new programme of study for ICT. Use it as a discussion point to find out what they know about the recent changes to the curriculum. The idea is to raise their awareness of the two key strands in Computing ie CS and digital literacy with some of the background to this. Also develop the idea that ICT will continue to be used as a term in education but to relate to the use of technology across the curriculum, or to support their professional development, and technology enhanced learning in general. Discuss how on the programme this week we will be discussing ICT in its broadest sense but that the next three seminars/workshops will focus much more on computing as defined in the new national curriculum.
Briefy introduce the idea that we all have a range of experience with ICT that we bring and we want to spend some time share and exchanging these whilst also thinking about how they might be useful to use pedagogically. Also important to stress here that in the brief time we have with them we can’t hope to cover the range of tools, applications, hardware that is out there but that we are trying to encourage them to develop the critical approach to making their own judgements about these tools.
Students to edit shared Google doc in pairs simultaneously. Give them about 15-20 minutes for this activity. Then use the updated Googledoc and ask for volunteers to present 4-5 tools that people may or may not be familiar with but would like to know more about. Use the micro-presentations to discuss further how they might use the tools and what some of the issues might be that have to be addressed.
Use this as an opportunity to share experiences of WordPress. Are there any aspects that they are struggling with or would like to know more about? Perhaps explain and model the difference between static pages and blog pages. Might also be necessary to model how to manage the menus structure and also turn off Facebook etc., widgets. Take it from the group. Also get them to demonstrate if necessary.
Emphasise the need for self help and taking responsibility for their own professional learning with technologies. Mention that they can use the IWB in the OLC and that it is a good idea to investigate and play in groups to become familiar if this an area for development. Show ‘The Book’ video if there is time.
Refer them back to the programme and what they need to do before the next Ed Studies lecture.
