What is a rainforest?? <ul><li>The rainforest is Earth’s oldest ecosystem! </li></ul><ul><li>They are very dense, hot forests – called rain forests because it is raining an average of 120 days per year in these areas! </li></ul><ul><li>http://www.eduweb.com/rain/rainfall.html </li></ul><ul><li>DID YOU KNOW… </li></ul><ul><li>… the rainforests cover only 6% of Earth’s surface but contain more than ½ the world’s plant & animal species! </li></ul>

  • 4. THE AMAZON “The Lungs of the Planet” <ul><li>The Amazon is the biggest tropical rainforest in the world – covering 2.5 million square miles! </li></ul><ul><li>How big is that? As big as the 48 mainland US states! </li></ul><ul><li>The Amazon is called the “lungs” because it is our world’s biggest supply of oxygen! More than 20% of all the oxygen is produced from this one forest! </li></ul>
  • 5. Where are the rain forests? Here I Am! The rainforests are located in a band all the way around the globe called the “tropics.” This area is found along the equator, giving it a certain temperature & climate…
  • 6. <ul><li>Because the rain forests are found near the equator, the temperature stays hot all year long! </li></ul><ul><li>It never freezes! </li></ul><ul><li>Temp. Range = 75-80 degrees </li></ul>

So who lives there…? <ul><li>DID YOU KNOW… </li></ul><ul><li>30 million species of plants & animals live in the rainforests! </li></ul><ul><li>1/2 of the world’s animals… </li></ul><ul><li>… and 2/3 of the world’s plants… </li></ul><ul><li>… all live together in these dense, dark environments. </li></ul>
