  2. 2. <ul><li>In modern times job opportunities as well as job-aspirants are on increase. </li></ul><ul><li>Selection of a course by student has become difficult in view of multiple choice. </li></ul><ul><li>Librarians and archivists were even during Oriental civilizations. </li></ul><ul><li>Librarians were in Ancient, Medieval and Mughal times. </li></ul>
  3. 3. <ul><li>Nalanda and Taxila Libraries were an attraction for the foreign students. </li></ul><ul><li>During British period proper training of librarians started. </li></ul><ul><li>Asa Don Dickinson student of Melvil Dewey was the first trained librarian of Panjab University, Lahore. </li></ul><ul><li>He started training school for the Indian aspirants. </li></ul>
  4. 4. <ul><li>Since the days of Dickinson, the profession of librarianship is touching new heights in India. </li></ul><ul><li>Number of colleges, Universities, Schools and other organisations have increased which need trained librarians. </li></ul><ul><li>Library Profession is now universally recognized one. </li></ul><ul><li>It has emerged as a full fledged independent discipline. </li></ul>

Expectations from Library Professionals <ul><li>Advent ICT has changed the in house working of Libraries. </li></ul><ul><li>Libraries are the best users of ICTechnologies. </li></ul><ul><li>Employers expect librarian well trained in Library Science as well as Computer Science. </li></ul><ul><li>Knowledge of Internet, Computer, Software, preparing database, OPAC etc is expected from the candidate. </li></ul>
  6. 6. <ul><li>Knowledge of e-resources, e-journals, e-books and e-documents is considered must. </li></ul><ul><li>Knowledge of library functioning and administration. </li></ul><ul><li>Knowledge of current activities. </li></ul><ul><li>A best service provider. </li></ul><ul><li>Employers expect good communication skill. </li></ul><ul><li>Employers want that librarian should be a good administrator, manager, leader and a scholar. </li></ul>

What We Face : <ul><li>Good pass percentage but lack of practical knowledge. </li></ul><ul><li>Students of correspondence courses rarely visit the Central university library. </li></ul><ul><li>They depend on cramming without seeing the reference sources. </li></ul><ul><li>Lack of knowledge of latest arrivals, research journals, book services etc. </li></ul><ul><li>Lack of reading habit. </li></ul>

Departments Face : <ul><li>Lack of latest Reference works in the University Libraries. </li></ul><ul><li>Lack of updated computer labs. </li></ul><ul><li>Lack of training by computer professionals. </li></ul><ul><li>Financial crunch : Lack of books. </li></ul><ul><li>Old editions of DDC are being used. </li></ul><ul><li>No Provision of computers for all students. </li></ul>
  9. 9. <ul><li>Some Universities are unable to subscribe foreign journals of Library and Information Science. </li></ul><ul><li>Most of the students depend on help books in which information is out-dated. </li></ul><ul><li>No Practical training of procedures being followed by University Libraries. </li></ul><ul><li>Lack of knowledge of Manuscripts, Rare documents, Archives etc. </li></ul>
  10. 10. Personal Experience : <ul><li>Candidates are: </li></ul><ul><li>Unaware of most latest popular works. </li></ul><ul><li>With M. Phil. Degree do not possess original research work. </li></ul><ul><li>Plagarism is their major problem. </li></ul><ul><li>Do not have information of e-resources. </li></ul><ul><li>Come for interview without any preparation. </li></ul>
  11. 11. Conclusion: <ul><li>Librarianship is rapidly deviating from the traditional ideology. </li></ul><ul><li>Teaching and practical librarianship should move with the times. </li></ul><ul><li>Teaching departments who produce librarians need to be more cautious. </li></ul><ul><li>Cordial relations are must between libraries and schools of Library and Information Science. </li></ul>
