Want To Believe It A short story by Krystal C.

Dad "Terry..."

The minute he dropped, I didn't want to believe it. When a man came to check his pulse, I didn't want to believe it. Even when the paramedics arrived, I didn't want to believe it.

He is not dead.

I repeated that in my head through out the whole ride to the hospital. I was still repeating it when I returned to my apartment, after the doctors told me he was officially gone. The minute he dropped was the minute he took his last breath. I didn't want to believe it.

How could a man, so strong as he, be dead? How could a man, that can kill you with his charming smile , be dead? How could a man, with so much love for his family, be dead?

When mom came over to my apartment, I spoke to her as if he was still alive. "He's in the hospital, probably eating cherry flavored jello. You know, like the one they gave to Carmen when she twisted her ankle during that soccer game. He's probably flirting with a nurse as we speak!" I could tell from her face she thought I was crazy . I think I was getting there and I think I wasn't helping her ease the pain and sorrow either.

It wasn't until Carmen knocked some sense into me that I finally came down to the conclusion that I wanted to stay so far away from. I was angered by Carmen, but I knew what she did was right .

"You can't think like that anymore, Terry. His funeral is coming up. He's gone ." Carmen told me, as we sat squished next to each other on my couch, flipping through plastic pages filled with glossy pictures after glossy pictures. In every one, dad was smiling. I knew I was going to miss that smile so much .

"Do you believe it now, sis?" Carmen asked.

"Yes, I believe it now." I answered.
