  • 1. Hardware Sketching WorkshopWith BlinkM And Craft ROBOShigeru KobayashiAssociate Professor, International Academy of Media Arts and Sciences [IAMAS]Part-time lecturer, Institute of Advanced Media Arts and Sciences [IAMAS]
  • 2. Overview • An introductory workshop for beginners to introduce the concept of hardware sketching • Design light patterns with BlinkM • Design lampshades with Illustrator, and fabricate with Craft ROBO • Iterate multiple times to explore ideas in hardware • The number of participants: 5 to 10 persons • Duration: 120 to 180 minutes
  • 3. What Is BlinkM • A series of smart LEDs produced by ThingM • Full-color RGB LED w/ 24-bit color control • Can be controlled Arduino via I2C • Fade between colors with variable timing and fade speeds • A little bit expensive ($15) in comparison to bare RGB LEDs, but can control in higher level • Once programmed, the BlinkM can be detached and work standalone • MaxM is capable of controlling high power LEDs
  • 4. How to Connect Your BlinkM? Why connect to pins from A2 to A5? A2: GND A3: Power A4: I2C SDA (data) A5: I2C SCK (clock)Excerpt from BlinkM data sheet (vv20100810)
  • 5. Getting Started With BlinkM 1. Connect your BlinkM to your Arduino board 2. Download examples from the following page http://thingm.com/products/blinkm.html 1. COMMUNICATOR (for your Arduino board) 2. SEQUENCER (for your PC) 3. Launch SEQUENCER and try controlling the BlinkM
  • 6. What Is Craft ROBO • A small cutting machine developed by Graphtec • Can cut various papers with a carrier sheet • Affordable price for individuals (about 200$) • Compatible with both Windows and Mac OS X • Plug-in is available form Illustrator • Various templates are available at Silhouette http://www.silhouettemachine.com/
  • 7. Getting Started With Craft ROBO • Point your web browser to the following page http://www.aviary.com/groups_group?gid=305897 • Open a template and export as a SVG file • Open the SVG file in Illustrator and modify a little bit • Try cutting with a Craft ROBO • Assemble a lampshade and drop your BlinkM in
  • 8. Let’s Create A LED Lamp • Sketch your ideas about LED lamps on papers • Design on a PC with Illustrator or Aviary/Raven • Fabricate lampshades with Craft ROBO • Iterate as many as possible to develop your ideas through hardware sketching processes
  • 9. Examples Of Idea Sketching
