The manioc (cassava) tuber (from South America)
and its biscuit played an important part in
Mauritian history a during World War 1, the
population was almost on starvation since many

fruits and vegetables section (including herbal

fish and seafood market. If you’re looking for
souvenirs, a wide variety of Malagasy handicrafts
are available along with souvenirs T-shirts of
varying quality. The level of hustling can be
tiresome, however and you’ll have to bargain
hard, start by slashing the price quoted.

10. Cap Malheureux
Cap Malheureux is a small fishing village located
on the furthest north tip of Mauritius. It offers
a magnificent view of some of the small islands
off the coast. Among others, Ile Plate, famous
for its lits lighthouse; Ile Ronde, inhabited only
by palm trees, harmless boas and indigenous
lizards; Ile aux Serpents, which, despite its name,
is not infested with snakes; and Coin de mire,
an enormous rock of historical importance,
since it was from there that the English secretly
embarked on 2 September, 1810 to win over the
island from the French.
