4. 4. What is HIV
5. 5.
 6. 6. VIRAL INFECTIONS: BEHAVIOUR
VIRUS
PROTECTION SYSTEM
CURE
INTERACTION
VIRUSESMULTIPLY
7. 7. WHAT IS A RISKY BEHAVIOUR
RISKY BEHAVIOUR IS THE BEHAVIOUR BY WHICH THERE ARISES A POSSIBLITY OF TRANSMISION OF INFECTION
8. 8. COMMON RISKY BEHAVIOURS
SEXUAL CONTACT.
DELIEVERY.
USE OF THE SAME SYRINGE
BLOOD TRANSFUSION
TRANSFER OR CONTACT OF THE FLUID OR THE TISSUE
9. 9. WHAT TO DO AFTER RISKY BEHAVIOUR?
THE CHANCE OF GETTING INFECTION IS 50%.
DO NOT BE CARRIED AWAY BY THE IDEA THAT
YOU HAVE DEFINITELY DEVELOPED HIV INFECTION
OR
YOU WILL NOT DEVELOP HIV INFECTION
AS THE BEHAVIOUR BEING LESS IN THE DEGREES OF RISK.
IT IS ADVISEABLE TO DETECT THE PRESENCE OF THE HIV VIRUS IN YOUR BODY BY LABORATERY TESTS.
10. 10. HOW TO DETECT THE HIV INFECTION
REMEMBER THERE MAY BE NO SYMPTOMS
THE ACTUAL SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF THE HIV INFECTION MAY BE EVIDENT AS LATE AS 6-8 YEARS OF THE INFECTION
DURING THIS PERIOD THE PATIENT CAN TRANSMIT THIS DISEASE TO OTHERS AS VIRUSES ARE MULTIPLYING IN HIS BODY
11. 11. HOW TO DETECT THE HIV INFECTION
LABORATERY TESTS
PCR TEST:

IT DETECTS THE VIRUS RATHER THAN ANTIBODY TO THE VIRUS.
 12. 12. IT TURNS POSITIVE (EARLIEST) WITHIN 3-5 DAYS.
 13. 13. VERY SPECIFIC AND IS NOT FALSE POSITIVE.
 14. 14. COSTLY AND REPORTING MAY TAKE 2 TO 4 DAYS
 15. 15. DONE ONLY IN ADVANCED CENTERS

ELISA TEST:

IT DETCTS THE ANTIBODY , A RESPONSE TO THE VIRAL INFECTION , IN THE BODY. HENCE IT CAN BE LATE AND FALSELY NEGATIVE.
 16. 16. TURNS POSITIVE USUALLY FROM 3 MONTHS TO 6 MONTHS AFTER RISKY BEHAVIOUR.
 17. 17. CHEAP AND REPORTING IS QUICK.
 18. 18. CAN BE DONE LOCALLY

ADVANCE TESTS
CD3, CD4 AND CD8:
THESE ARE SPECIALISED TESTS TO KNOW THE DEGREE AND EXTENT TO WHICH THE BODY HAS SUCUUMBED TO THE INFECTION..HIGH COUNT OF CD4 MEANS BODY HAS STILL NOT SUFFERED FROM THE INFECTION. A LOW COUNT OF CD4 MEANS THE DISEASE HAS TAKEN OVER THE DEFENCE MECHANISH OF BODY AND IS TAKING THE BODY TO THE ULTIMATE EVENTS.
19. 19. ADVANCED TESTS
VIRAL LOAD:
THE NO OF COPIES OF THE HIV VIRUS FOUND IN 1CUBIC MM OF BLOOD
TEST IS HIGHLY SOFISTICATED
VERY HELPFUL IN STUDYING THE RESPONSE OF THERAPY IN HIV INFECTION
AS PATIENT IMPROVES THE VIRAL LOAD DECREASES AND VICE VERSA
20. 20. WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE COURSE OF INFECTION ?

THE VIRUS ENTERES IN THE BODY
 21. 21. INVADES THE DEFENCE MECHANISM OF THE BODY.
 22. 22. THE DEFENCE WARRIORS WHICH ARE CD4 LYMPHOCYTES IN THE BODY

ARE SELECTIVELY ATTACKED BY THE VIRUS

LEADING TO REDUCTION IN THE NUMBER OF CD4 CELLS.
 23. 23. BODY RESPONDS BY PRODUCING MORE AND MORE CD4 LYMPHOCYTES
 24. 24. FRESHLY PRODUCED LYMPHOCYTES ARE ATTACKED AGAIN
 25. 25. THIS TUG OF WAR CONTINUES INDEFINITELY TILL THE TIME BODY CAPACITY FAILS TO PRODUCE ANYMORE OF THEM.
 26. 26. THIS LEADS TO A GRADUAL REDUCTION IN NUMBER OF CD4 CELLS
 27. 27. . CONCURRENTLY THE NUMBER OF VIRUSES IS INCREASING.(VIRAL LOAD).IT GOES INTO MILLIONS OF COPIES.

Various stages: day1 to day z
STAGES DURATION CD4
TRANSMISSION 0 ...................
ACUTE SYNDROME 2 TO 4 WEEKS .....................
SEROCONVERSION 6 TO 12 WEEKS ........................
EARLY HIV UP TO 6 MONTHS .......................
ASYMTOMATIC UP TO ......................
INFECTION 6 TO 10 YEARS
EARLY 1 TO 2 YEARS 200 TO 500
SYMPTOMATIC
ADVANSED AIDS 1 TO 1.5 YEARS 50 TO 200
TERMINAL ILLNESS .......................... LESS THAN 50
28. 28. TO PROLONG HEALTHY LIFE
29. 29. GOOD LUCK
