Earth worm the natural manure making machine

 1. 1. EARTH WORM
The Recyclers
2. 2. Created By,
VIII Std Students,
S.M.R.V.H.S.S.,
Vadasery,
Nagercoil
Kanyakumary District-629001
3. 3. Purpose

To keep clean our school campus by converting the degradable wastes into manure.
 4. 4. To prepare Vermicomposed manure at our home.
 5. 5. To find innovative ideas to multiply the worms in large scale.
 6. 6. To grow herbal garden in our school and to give awareness on natural products.
 7. 7. To supply the manure to the needy farmers.
 8. 8. To give global awareness on vermiculture.

Vermitech-Implementation
Student activities
( 2-12-2009)
Selection of place for vermiculture
Dig the pit
(5-12-2009)
9. 9. Spread the coconut fiber (5-12-2009)
Student Activities…….
Pour the cow dung water on the coconut fibers.
(5-12-2009)
Please click here to watch the videos.
Watch more videos in Images and sounds Folder.
10. 10. Student Activities…….
Fill the pit with agro waste ,cow dung, and fallen leaves from trees (5-12-2009)
Waste from Noon meal centre is put into the pit.
Leave it for two weeks.sprinkle water regularly.
11. 11. After two weeks earth worm was applied on the bedding
(13-12-2009)
Student Activities…….
After three weeks We can observe the Vermicomposed manure at the top of the pit. (The appearance of black granular crumbly powder on top of vermibeds indicate harvest stage of the compost. )
(23-12-2009)
12. 12. Student Activities…….

Watering is stopped for at least 5 days at this stage.
 13. 13. The earthworms go down and the compost is collected from the top.
 14. 14. Separate the baby worms and worm cocoons from it by sieving method.

Now the manure is ready to use.
15. 15. APPRECIATION FOR OUR PROJECT
Please click on the picture to watch the video
Mr.K.Subramonian,
HeadMaster,
S.M.R.V.H.S.S.
Vadasery,
Nagercoil-629001
16. 16. Innovative idea(1)
Multiplication of worms in large scale

Prepare a mixture of cow dung and dried leaves in 1:1 proportion.
 17. 17. Release earthworm 50 numbers/10 kg. Of mixture and mix dried grass/leaves or husk and keep it in shade.
 18. 18. Sprinkle water over it time to time to maintain moisture level. By this process, earthworms multiply 300 times within one to two months.
 19. 19. These earthworms can be used to prepare vermicompost.

Innovative idea(2)
Hanging vermicomposed
If you have no adequate place at your home you may use a basket and hang it in a suitable cool place at your home to convert the home garbage into manure.
20. 20. Innovative idea-3
Using the coir pith to keep moisture
Coir Pith

100% pure and biodegradable that acts multi purpose soil conditioners.
 21. 21. Enhance the efficiency of fertilizers, protect against bacterial and fungal infection and helps in keeping the temperature of soil under control.
 22. 22. Hence we may use this as Vermi bed layer to keep the moisture for the earthworm.

Precautions

Vermicompost pit should be protected from direct sun light.
 23. 23. To maintain moisture level, spray water on the pit when required.
 24. 24. Protect the worms from ant, rat and bird.

Advantages of
Vermicomposting

Vermicompost is an eco friendly natural fertilizer
 25. 25. It does not have any adverse effect on soil, plant and environment.
 26. 26. It improves water retention capacity of soil because of its high organic matter content.
 27. 27. It promotes better root growth and nutrient absorption.
 28. 28. Earthworm castings in the home garden often contain 5 to 11 times more nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium as the surrounding soil.
 29. 29. Promoting home composting as a solution to reduce global warming caused by methane by degradable waste in landfills.

Nutrient Profile
Nitrogen (N) = 1.52%
Phosphate(P2O5) = 1.07%
Potassium(K2O) = 1.13%
Moisture = 25%
Total Organic Carbon= 90%
30. 30. Vermicomposed manure is used for herbal garden project
Herbal garden at school
Vermi composed manure is applied for herbal plants in our school.
31. 31. Create awareness on Vermiculture to the whole students in the class
Students got excited about it and ready to prepare Vermicomposed manure at their home
Please click here to view the permission letters from their parents.
Appreciation letters for implementing this project at their street.
32. 32. Student Gopika participated in an exhibition to give awareness on Vermiculture to other school students.
Venue:AmalaConvent,Thackalay
Kanyakumary District
33. 33. Economics of Vermiculture

This project can be started from any available fund.
 34. 34. Raw materials available easily and locally in abundance.
 35. 35. Successful Organic Farming and no Marketing problem.
 36. 36. No Chance of failure.
 37. 37. No requirement of electricity .
 38. 38. Additional Income form cow dung, agro waste and wastes available .

Project is published in web sites to create awareness on Vermiculture
Visit www.smrvvermiculture.nexo.com
To view more web pages please click here
39. 39. Project is published in other web sites to create awareness on Vermiculture
www.blogspot.com
41. 41. Survey taken after Implementaion of the project
No. of People
Responses (yes)
No. of People Responses(No)
42. 42. Our future plans

To convert all degradable wastes into

manure for better environment.

To create awareness on vermiculture to

Self Help Groups and guide them to earn
money from wastes.

To fertile the land to increase yielding.
 43. 43. Create a Global awareness on

Vermiculture.
44. 44. Expectation of our project
From ,
home to street
street to village
Village to town
Town to District
District to state
State to Country
Country to whole world
We invite you all please join with us to keep the earth clean……..
