Student Activities…….<br />Fill the pit with agro waste ,cow dung, and fallen leaves from trees (5-12-2009)<br />Waste from Noon meal centre is put into the pit.<br />Leave it for two weeks.sprinkle water regularly.<br />

(The appearance of black granular crumbly powder on top of vermibeds indicate harvest stage of the compost. )<br />(23-12-2009)<br />

The earthworms go down and the compost is collected from the top.
Separate the baby worms and worm cocoons from it by sieving method.</li></ul>Now the manure is ready to use.<br />

Innovative idea(1) <br />Multiplication of worms in large scale<br /><ul><li> Prepare a mixture of cow dung and dried leaves in 1:1 proportion.
Release earthworm 50 numbers/10 kg. Of mixture and mix dried grass/leaves or husk and keep it in shade.
Sprinkle water over it time to time to maintain moisture level. By this process, earthworms multiply 300 times within one to two months.
These earthworms can be used to prepare vermicompost. </li></li></ul><li>Innovative idea(2)<br />Hanging vermicomposed<br />If you have no adequate place at your home you may use a basket and hang it in a suitable cool place at your home to convert the home garbage into manure.<br />
Innovative idea-3<br />Using the coir pith to keep moisture<br />Coir Pith<br /><ul><li>100% pure and biodegradable that acts multi purpose soil conditioners.
Enhance the efficiency of fertilizers, protect against bacterial and fungal infection and helps in keeping the temperature of soil under control.
Hence we may use this as Vermi bed layer to keep the moisture for the earthworm.</li></li></ul><li>Precautions<br /><ul><li>Vermicompost pit should be protected from direct sun light.
To maintain moisture level, spray water on the pit when required.
