operates the TLD via its Agreement with ICANN
– Significant financial and other obligations

– Introduced over the course of ~25 years
• 1985: .arpa, .com, .edu., .gov., .mil, .net, .org

• 2002: .name, .coop, .pro, .aero
• 2003: .asia, .cat, .jobs, .mobi, .tel, .travel
• 2011: .xxx
• 2013 – Hundreds of new TLDs will be possibly launched

4. APPLICATION PROCESS
• April 20th? - deadline to submit your application for a new
TLD
– 10 year term (minimum); est. cost of $2 + million
• Some companies have publically announced that they are
applying for a new TLD
– Generics - .taxi, .club, .shop, .music, .dental
– Geographic - .tokyo, .chicago
– Brands - .motorola, .hitachi, .cannon, .deloitte, .google
• “Reveal Day” - Approximately 2 weeks from Application
Deadline
– Applications will be published by ICANN
