  • 2. Medlin & Associates, Inc. Acoustical Consultants San Diego City Schools Classroom Acoustics Medlin provided acoustical consulting services for San Diego City Schools to reduce noise and lower the reverberation in an elementary school to assist in improving the learning and listening conditions to meet the stringent requirements for deaf/hearing-impaired students. Our services included: • Pre- and post-treatment measurement of noise and reverberation time • Measurement of Sound Transmission Class (STC) between two adjacent rooms • Measurements of traffic, airplane, and HVAC noise sources • Guidance in the use of the new ANSI Classroom Acoustics Standard • Recommendations to reduce noise and lower reverberation time • Assistance with vendor selection of recommended treatments. • Provided our findings in an Acoustical Report. Benefit: Speech Intelligibility is a function of both noise and reverberation time. To achieve optimal learning and listening conditions, both must be analyzed, evaluated and treated. In addition, with the improvement in listening conditions, the benefits extend to the entire classroom learning environment. Medlin & Associates, Inc. P.O. Box 130941 Carlsbad CA 92013-0941 (760) 930-6515 www.medlin-acoustics.com
  • 3. Medlin & Associates, Inc. Acoustical Consultants SDSU Calpulli Student Health Center Medlin’s role on this newly opened 4 story student health center project is: • Provide facility survey and noise inspection/measurements • Review project plans and detailed specs of walls, ceiling and surface finishes. In particular evaluate overhead for noise transmission path thru sound shorts, HVAC and other potential noise paths. In some areas, hallway and waiting room reverberation treatments may be necessary. • Coordinate with facilities engineering staff • Provide findings of acoustical recommendations in a report for client. Benefit: This facility encompasses pharmacy, urgent care, student health exam rooms, conference training rooms and mental health counseling rooms. The facility also includes special testing rooms for students with disabilities who cannot test under conditions which exist in a mainstream classroom. In multi-use medical facilities such as this, there is an increased expectation of quiet and speech privacy. By integrating acoustical solutions into the facility, the users of the space will be able to listen and concentrate more fully on client issues and patients will have increased privacy. • 4. Medlin & Associates, Inc. Acoustical Consultants Calvary Chapel High School Chula Vista , CA Medlin provided acoustical consulting services for the proposed Calvary Chapel HS located in the City of Chula Vista California. Our services included: • Ambient Noise measurements • Projections of school related noises to nearby residential areas. These included site layouts, traffic noise impacts, sporting events, crowd noises and audible bells. • Iterative design impacts on noise. • Recommendation of project mitigation to meet Acoustical Standards • Provided our findings in an Acoustical Report. Benefit: The project was successfully moved forward due to our proactive approach in addressing city and neighborhood concerns. When topography became an issue, our staff conducted a test of the noise levels which would be anticipated at the various topographies. Medlin & Associates, Inc. P.O. • 5. Medlin & Associates, Inc. Acoustical Consultants City of Carlsbad, CA Dove Library and Cannon Art Gallery Medlin’s role on this project was: • Provide an assessment of noise and reverberation in City main library and art gallery spaces • Perform acoustical testing and analysis of RT-60 • Provide recommendations to treat interior spaces of library, including circulation, reference, children’s, main foyer, magazines/newspapers, Friends bookstore, and associated art gallery • Review library noise focus group meeting minutes and make additional recommendations Benefit: Libraries are traditionally thought of as being quiet spaces. However, modern libraries often include spaces for media/computers, teens and children, bookstores and art galleries that often increase facility noise. The selection of room size and surface finishes is important in determining the resulting reverberation time. In the design phase there may be a tradeoff between the desired aesthetic of a volumetric space, and the functional requirement for acoustics which are conducive to reading, learning, quiet study and tutoring. Undertaking an acoustical improvement can help patrons to be more comfortable, to be able to read and perform concentrated study with less fatigue.
