Words their way Presentation Transcript

  • 1. “ Words Their Way” in an ELL Classroom By Karla McFadden
  • 2.
    • “ Words Their Way” is a research based Word Study program, written by Donald R. Bear.
  • 3.
      • It will change the way you teach Phonics, Vocabulary, and Spelling!
  • 4. Gone are the days of…
      • Pretest on Monday
      • Send a list of words home to study
      • Posttest on Friday
  • 5. In the Beginning…
    • Give your students a Spelling Inventory.
    • Analyze the results to determine their appropriate developmental stage.
    • Form groups according to these results.
  • 6. Stages of Development
    • Emergent
    • Letter Name-Alphabetic
    • Within Word Pattern
    • Syllables and Affixes
    • Derivational Relations
  • 7. Next…
    • Teach “whole group” the types of sorts and games that students will encounter.
    • Teach your routines and expectations.
  • 8. Group Rotation Sample
    • Day One: Teacher will introduce new feature. Students then cut it out, and practice sorting.
    • Day Two: Students practice the sort and write the words in a journal.
    • Day Three: Students glue the sort on paper in columns according to the feature.
    • Day Four: Students do a Word Hunt for words containing the same feature.
    • Day Five: Students play a word game containing the same feature.
  • 9. There’s so much more…
    • Last year I had five groups.
    • I could easily meet with one group a day. Then I would wander around to watch and confer with students.
    • I found this program met the needs of ALL my learners (LD, ELL, TAG, etc.)
  • 10. Lastly… I suggest that you check out this inexpensive program and judge for yourself. You won’t be disappointed!
