Sexual Discrimination in the Work Place <ul><li>Definition: </li></ul><ul><li>Discrimination (usually in employment) that excludes one sex to the benefit of the other sex. </li></ul><ul><li>Title VII Civil Rights Act, 1964: </li></ul><ul><li>It is unlawful to discriminate against any employee or applicant for employment because of his/her sex in regard to hiring, termination, promotion, compensation, job training, or any other term, condition, or privilege of employment. </li></ul>

Sexual Discrimination in the Work Place <ul><li>The Civil Rights of 1964: </li></ul><ul><li>Landmark piece of legislation in the US </li></ul><ul><li>Outlawed unequal application of voter registration and racial segregation in schools, at the workplace, and by facilities that served general public. </li></ul><ul><li>Long-term impacts on the whole country. </li></ul><ul><li>Prohibited discrimination </li></ul>
  5. 5. Sexual Discrimination in the Work Place <ul><li>The Civil Rights of 1964: </li></ul><ul><li>The bill was introduced by John F. Kennedy in his civil rights speech of June, 1963. </li></ul><ul><li>Subsequent History: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>1971-Supreme Court ruled that a company could not discriminate against a potential female employee because she had a preschool-age child unless they did the same with potential male employees. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>1977-Court struck down state minimum height requirements for police officers. </li></ul></ul>

Sexual Discrimination in the Work Place <ul><li>The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC): </li></ul><ul><li>An independent federal law enforcement agency that enforces laws against workplace discrimination. </li></ul><ul><li>Investigates discrimination complaints based on an individual's race, color, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, age, disability and retaliation for reporting and/or opposing a discriminatory practice. </li></ul><ul><li>Empowered to file discrimination suits against employers on behalf of alleged victims and to adjudicate claims of discrimination brought against federal agencies. </li></ul>
