Shawsville Middle Baseball Field REGISTRATION & PROGRAM POLICIES Registration for Summer Programs will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, May 9 for tours and senior programs and Monday, May 12 for all other programs. Mail-in registrations will be processed in the order they are received. Visa and Master- Card payments are accepted. If the minimum number of participants is not met, the class may not meet. Those who are registered will be notified if the class or activity is cancelled. Upon registration you will receive a confirmation of start- ing dates and times as printed in the schedule. Parents, we need your help! Please make arrangements to pick up your child on time at the conclusion of the program or activity. Failure to do so may result in your child not being allowed to complete the program or activity. Parents must pick up their children inside the facility. Your child’s safety is our concern. Refunds are available if requested before the start of the program or activity. Through the mid-point of a program or activity, pro-rated refunds will be considered on a merit basis. Refunds are automatic when programs or activities are cancelled or schedule changes prohibit attendance. In the event that the participant cannot attend the program or activity, he/she must provide notice at least seven (7) days prior to the start of the program or activity or prior to the registration deadline, in order to receive a full refund. In the event of inclement weather, if Montgomery County schools are closed, then athletic programs are cancelled. The Fall brochure will be available September 3.

  3. GREETINGS! Su mmer is almost here - what do you want to do? If kayaking down a breathtaking, scenic river is what you have in mind, we’ve got a ton of extraordinary progra ms for you to choose from – for all skill levels! We also have a bu nch of fa ntastic progra ms involving biking, walking or ru nning on the Huckleberry Trail, taking swimming lessons at the Frog Pond, hiking with other active adults, watching baseball ga mes, building robots, or even fishing on the river. Some changes have been going on to make your su mmer more fun! The Frog Pond, which opens for business on May 31, received a great face-lift in the spring. The shell has been re-plastered and is ready for feet both little and big while Mid-County Park has a more open feel now that the old Parks and Recreation office has been removed. Baseball is in full swing and our Chevy Tahoe Raffle to raise money for the baseball season is almost over. Don’t forget to buy some tickets for $5 each at the MCPR office. Ticket sales will end on May 23rd. I hope to see everyone out enjoying the beautiful scenery a nd the great natural a menities Montgomery County has to offer – Just for the fun of it!   4. SUMMER CAMPS FROG HOPPERS CAMP (Ages 6-10) Frog Hoppers, Montgomery County’s summer day camp, is a great way for children to experience education and recreation in the outdoors! This awesome summer camp will structure small group activities around the Frog Pond, Montgomery County’s outdoor leisure pool. The camp has convenient weekly sessions which include group swim lessons, daily swim, sports and games, arts and crafts and nature activities. In addition, we offer theme parties and guest speakers. Camp is held daily rain or shine. Qualified, trained and experienced counselors will initiate fun, interesting and challenging activities for all campers - creating lifetime memories! Application forms and registration packages are available at the recreation office. Camp is held Monday-Friday with drop off after 8 a.m. and pick up by 5:30 p.m. A late pick up fee of $1 per minute will be accessed after 5:30 p.m. Limited space so register early. Camp will not be held on Friday, July 4th. Instructor Victoria Mullins will use materials such as colored pencils, paints and crayons to produce a detailed drawing. Registration deadline is June 23. $55 DAY TIME LOCATION COURSE Mon-Thurs, 6/30-7/3 3-5 p.m. MCPAC 3350 PASTEL DRAWING CAMP (Ages 9-15) Pastels are an easy, colorful medium, similar to chalk. This art camp, designed for the older child, will explore the inner artist. Focus will be on outdoor scenes and animals. The registration deadline is June 23. $44 DAY TIME LOCATION COURSE Mon-Thurs, 6/30-7/3 5:30-7:30 p.m. MCPAC 3351 ANIMAL PORTRAIT CAMP (Ages 6-10) Have you always wanted to draw your favorite pet? During this camp the #2 pencil, along with various colored pencils, will produce the final product. Basic drawing techniques will be the foundation of the instruction, producing a detailed pet portrait.   5. KIDS FISHING CAMP (Ages 9-13) Learn to fish with some of the best fishing guides in the area! MCPR and Tangent Outfitters will teach you everything from baiting a hook to catching that big one. This wee k-long camp will introduce you to a varie ty of fishing styles from small mouth bass on the New River, rainbow trout in private stocked streams and large mou th bass and cat fishing in local farm ponds. Camp staff, fishing guides, transporta tion, lunc hes, and all equ ipm ent are provided in this all-in-one cam p. The deadline to register is July 9. $475 DAY TIME Mon-Fri, 7/21-7/25 LOCATION 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. COURSE NRV 3289 LEGO/ROBOTIC CAMP (4th-5th grades) Tired of chores?! Using Lego Mindstorms Robotic NXT Invention System you might actually invent a machine to pick up trash or even write your name on your home- work! This 5-day camp will give children entering the 4th and 5th grades the opportunity to build and program small Lego robots. This is great experience for any child who is considering joining a Lego League team in the fall. Instructor Mike Collver is the head coach for the Montgomery County Public Schools robotics team known nationally as "Team 401." Your robot will utilize infrared sensors for a whole new way to control every movement you ask it to do. We will also have swimming opportunities in the Frog Pond swimming pool to take full advantage of summer fun. The deadline to register is July 14. $150 DAY TIME LOCATION COURSE Mon-Fri, 7/21-7/25 9 a.m.-12 p.m. MCAC 3292 ADVANCED LEGO ROBOTICS (4th-5th grades) This is the next step in Lego Robotics. This camp is intended for past students of the original Robotic program - or if you have extensive knowledge working with the NXT Lego kits. Build on your past experiences and create robots you never thought you could build. What a great building block for future involvement in school robotics. The registration deadline is July 14. $150 DAY TIME LOCATION COURSE Mon-Fri, 7/21-7/25 1-5 p.m. MCAC 3298 CAN YOU DIG THIS? (Ages 6-10) Archeology and Paleontology seem like big words to kids. Sciensational Work- shops for Kids makes it come alive with simulated fossil excavations and over 100 fossils, dirt and lots of fun. Some of the fossils are up to 500-million years old. Discover an actual dinosaur bone and a 500-million year-old trilobite. We’ll provide the cleaning brushes, three-lens magnifiers, labels and specimen bags. We’ll use our geological time and fossil chart to identify 20-million year-old sharks teeth, mammal bones, and more. Make plaster replicas of a cave bear tooth, ammonite, and Tyrannosaurus Rex tooth. See and work with our mineral collections, along with growing your own crystals, and learn to be a rock hound to identify different rocks and minerals. Get pictures of yourself lifting a giant pumice specimen straight from Mt. St. Helens. This is a great opportunity for kids to learn.   6. CSI − CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION (Ages 8-12) You’ll be a super science sleuth. Have fun learning about forensics, crime scene investigations, and crime lab chemistry as you perform as many as 25 different experiments designed to show you how those tricky cases are solved. Search for the evidence, gather clues, and discover how science can help solve a mystery. Participants will dust for finger- prints, analyze handwriting, test for blood type using simulated blood, examine hair and clothing fibers, practice chemistry to identify mystery substances and much more. Participants will then use their skills to solve crimes of the century. The deadline to register is June 23. $135 DAY TIME LOCATION COURSE Mon-Thurs, 6/30-7/3 9 a.m.-12 p.m. MCGC 3290 ROBO WORKSHOP “THE WEASEL” − THE WALL HUGGING ROBOT (Ages 7-12) This workshop will bring a whole new perspective to the world of robotics. During this 4-day workshop participants will have the opportunity to build The Weasel. The Weasel is sleek, smart, and simply amazing. It has two motors, a three speed gearbox, built-in sonic tracking system and WOW can it go fast! The Weasel has two photo sensors that allow it to see a line or feel its way along walls and around corners. It can go through a maze and follow you around. It’s all yours to make and keep. Learn about gears, sensors, electronic components, circuit boards and more. You’ll also get to design and program robots that you get to build. Learn about robotic technology - the wave of the future. Join us in learning and having fun! The deadline to register is July 14. $135 DAY TIME LOCATION COURSE Mon-Thurs, 7/28-7/31 9 a.m.-12 p.m. MCPAC 3392 MULTIMEDIA VACATION SCENES CAMP (Ages 5-10) Instructor Victoria Mullins uses crayons, paints and pencils to instruct in the drawing of beach scenes and camping landscapes. Imaginations will soar as this course progresses, leading to increased self-confidence and drawing techniques. The registration deadline is July 7. $55 DAY TIME LOCATION COURSE Mon-Thurs, 7/14-7/17 3-4:30 p.m. MCPAC 3353 DAY TIME LOCATION COURSE Mon-Fri, 6/23-6/27 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. New River 3296 TOM SAWYER/HUCK FINN RIVER CAM (Ages 11+) Take an adventure of a P life- time exploring the New River in a varie ty of water crafts. MCPR has teamed up with Tangent Outfitters for this fun-fi lled camp. Exploration will be the them e of the week as we discover the excit ing elements the New River has to offer. You’ll travel on Rec kayaks, canoes, and rafts. No experience is required for this fun and adventurous week on the water. We’ll float on some of the rivers ’ most remote locations. A first class , healthy meal will be served each day, and along with the guidance of profe s- sional staff, this camp is top-notch. deadline to register is June 16. $435 The 7
  7. SPORT CAMPS MCPR is partnering with various coaches and instructors to offer a variety of summer sports camps this year to help keep kids active. This year we’re offering football, basketball, lacrosse, tennis, equestrian, volleyball, soccer and others in various age groups for boys and girls. Below are just a few of the offerings. NEW! AUBURN FOOTBALL CAMP (Ages 7-13) Come join Auburn head football coach Phil Collett and the rest of the Auburn Eagles coaching staff as they hold their first annual youth football camp. This camp is designed for everyone ages 7-13 and will be held at Auburn High School. The camp will focus on fundamentals, offense and defense skills and plays. All campers will receive a t-shirt as well. Sign up today! $20 DAY TIME LOCATION COURSE Mon-Thurs, 7/14-7/17 5:30-8 p.m. AHS 3394 SHAWN GOOD BASKETBALL CAMP (Ages 8-16) Coach Shawn Good is holding his annual basketball camp at Auburn this summer! Watch for more information at local schools and by calling our offices at 382-6975 or AHS at 382-5160. Coach Shawn is a former Virginia Tech Hokie, playing and earning all tournament team selection during the 1995 NIT as well as player of the game during the 1996 NCAA tournament. Coach Shawn has been varsity coach at Auburn High School for the last 4-years and has been doing camps for over 10-years in Indiana and Virginia. This camp will focus on basic fundamentals. NEW! EAST MONT FOOTBALL CAMP (Ages 7-13) Eastern Montgomery Mustangs head football coach Mark Poston introduces his first annual youth football camp. Targeted for kids ages 7-13, this camp will teach the basic fundamentals of the game of football including drills for offense and defense. This is a good chance to shed some pounds and become familiar with the Mustang way. This camp is slated to run this summer at Eastern Montgomery High. NEW! MUSTANGS BASKETBALL CAMP (Ages 6-13) Last year’s Junior Mustang Camp was a huge success! This year we invite everyone to come join head boys varsity coach Jeff Myers as he hosts his first Mustangs youth basketball camp. The camp instructors will be players and assistant coaches with East Mont’s basketball team, the 07-08 Region C champions, and will teach the fundamentals of basketball. Coach Myers has been a head coach for 7 years, six in Florida and now one with East Mont. He played college basketball at Western Maryland where he finished top 15 in assists and minutes played. All skill levels are encouraged to attend, even if this is your first time with a basketball. The camp is open to all boys and girls ages 6-13. DAY TIME LOCATION COURSE Mon-Fri 7-9 p.m. EMHS 3427 LACROSSE CAMP Lacrosse camps for various ages are offered through our friends at the New River Valley Lacrosse Club. Camps are held throughout the summer for various age groups looking to learn a new sport. For more information about lacrosse be sure to check out their website at www.NRVLC.org 8

START SMART FOOTBALL CAMP (Ages 3-6) Start Smart Football teaches children (boys and girls) ages 3-4 and 5-6 the basic motor skills necessary to play organized football while they work one-on-one and spend quality time with their parents. The program focuses on teaching children and their parents skills in throwing, catching, kicking/punting and running/agility without the threat of competition or the fear of getting hurt. Program will be held at Auburn Elementary and Shawsville Middle. Please note the change in time and format. $35 DAY TIME Mon-Fri, 8/4-8/8 LOCATION 6-7 p.m. COURSE Mon-Fri, 8/11-8/15 SMS 6-7 p.m. 3400 AES 3402 START SMART SOCCER CAMP (Ages 3-5) Start Smart Soccer is a developmentally-appropriate soccer program for children (boys and girls) 3-5 years old. The program prepares children for organized soccer in a fun, non-threatening environment. Start Smart prepares children and their parents for organized soccer without the threat of competition or the fear of getting hurt. Age-appropriate soccer equipment is used to teach kicking, dribbling, trapping, throw-ins and agility. Program will be held at Auburn Elementary and Price’s Fork Elementary. $35 DAY TIME LOCATION COURSE Mon-Fri, 6/16-6/20 6-7 p.m. AES 3396 Mon-Fri, 6/23-6/27 6-7 p.m. PFES 3398 TENNIS CAMP Tennis camp and tennis lessons are taught by our tennis coach, Jim Jastremski. Jim is the former head coach at Christiansburg High School and a certified coach through the USTA. Registrations, fees and more information about tennis programs are handled with Jim directly and he can be reached at 540-693-6699 or 540-382-5178 ext 120. Beginners’ camp introduces kids to the basics and fundamentals of tennis. H.I.T. (High Intensity Tennis) is an advanced junior program specially designed for the current high school tennis player or a player who has a desire to play on a tennis team. Emphasis will be on ground strokes, serve, volley and strategy in singles or doubles. Your overall game will improve with this program. Adult group lessons or private lessons are also available by request. All camps/lessons are held at the USTA Welcome Center at the tennis courts at Christiansburg High School. $30. POOL RENTALS •The Montgomery County Frog Pond may be rented by outside groups during evening hours. •The rental fee is $175 for a minimum 2-hour rental. $75 each additional hour. •Rental fee includes a minimum of 2 lifeguards for the first 50 people. Maximum party size is 150 people. •Availa ble rental times are as follows : 8-11 p.m. on Monda ys, Tuesda ys and Thursdays. 7-11 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. No Wednesday or Friday night rentals. •Reservations must be confirmed one week prior to date requested, with total fee due at that time. Please make reservations in person at the recreation office. The Snow Barn concessions are available for your pool party. They can provide you and your guests with a cookout experience design ed just for your event. Ask for details when you make your pool reservation. Certified scuba instructors open up a whole new world of adventure for children. Ages 6-8 will have instruction in snorkeling and ages 8-12 in scuba diving. Upon completion of the pool dive, each child will receive a personalized certificate stating that they have participated in a scuba diving experience and a picture of themselves under- water in scuba gear! Masks, fins, snorkels and scuba gear will be provided. Participants must fill out medical form upon registration.   10. PARENT AND TOT AQUATICS (Ages 1-3) Designed for children 1-3 years old, this program builds swimming readiness by emphasizing fun in the water. Parents and children participate in several guided practice sessions that help children learn elementary skills including water entry, bubble blowing, front kicking, back floating, underwater exploration and more. Once children can perform basic skills without parental assistance they may begin the swim program. This is a Red Cross program which includes certificate and booklet. Parent must participate with child. The registration deadline is June 27. $35 DAY TIME LOCATION COURSE Thurs, 7/3-8/7 6-6:30 p.m. Frog Pond 3319 BEGINNING ADULT SWIM LESSONS (Ages 14+) It’s never too late for swim lessons! This class is for teens and adults without swimming experience or who may have some fear of the water. We’ll follow a comfortable pace, making sure all participants feel safe. The course will include breaststroke, back- stroke, rhythmic breathing and back float. If time allows we’ll cover other strokes. The registration deadline is July 2. $35 DAY TIME LOCATION COURSE Mon, 7/7-7/28 7-7:45 p.m. Frog Pond 3320 ~ SWIM LESSON REGISTRATION PROCEDURES ~ 1. Registration for all swim classes will be accepted by mail or they may be dropped off at the recreation office. 2. Registration for a second class will only be accepted after completion and passing of first class, register one student per form. 3. Indicate 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice on registration form. If you’re not contacted prior to the class meeting, assume you’re registered in your 1st choice. 4. Regardless of reason, no refunds will be issued or class changes allowed in the 2-weeks prior to lesson beginning date. 5. Cancelled sessions due to weather will be re-scheduled as appropriate for pool space. 6. Classes meet Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for 2 weeks, 30 minutes each day. 7. Payment must be included with registration form. 11
  11. SWIM LESSONS Montgomery County Parks and Recreation is dedicated to providing quality swim lessons to children ages 3-8. Class levels provide participants with water orientation to advanced skills. Each child participates in skill levels that are mastered with patience, practice and time. The Frog Pond staff is committed to providing the best possible aquatic activities for each individual need. JELLYFISH (Ages 3+) For those above 3 years of age, without swimming skills or who may have some fear of the water. Child should be comfortable in a group setting. Class promotes water adjustment while introducing elementary forms of propulsion. $40 Session 1: June 9-18 6 p.m. Course 3322 Session 2: June 23-July 2 6 p.m. Course 3323 Session 3: July 7-16 6 p.m. Course 3324 GUPPY (Ages 4+) Child must be adjusted to the water and group settings. Skills to be taught include kicking, arm stroke, backstroke, back float and safety skills. $40 Session 1: June 9-18 9 a.m. Course 3325 Session 2: June 9-18 6 p.m. Course 3326 Session 3: June 23-July 2 9 a.m. Course 3327 Session 4: July 21-30 9 a.m. Course 3328 Session 5: July 21-30 6 p.m. Course 3329 MINNOW (Ages 5+) Participants must have completed the Guppy level. Come out and participate on trails right here in Montgomery County. There will be many different classes of riders, so if you’re just starting out on your bike or you’re a Brush Mountain veteran, you’ll have a great time on some of the best mountain bike trails in the state. This race is part of a double-header weekend that will be lead off by the Brush Mountain Breakdown, a 1/2 marathon, 10K and 3K trail run on Saturday, October 11. Day one will take place in calm, user-friendly water where we’ll practice getting in and out of the boat and focus on balance, body mechanics, strokes, turns and leans. Learning to “wet exit” and practicing the “Eskimo roll” will help you find a comfort zone in your kayak - even when you’re upside down! A day of practice will help you build a perfect foundation of smart paddling habits that are grounded in good technique. Day Two - We’ll put the basics we’ve learned to work on a scenic 8-mile, Class II section of the New River. We’ll review your paddling skills and introduce new ones that will allow you to maneuver your kayak more efficiently. Upon arrival you’ll settle into the bunk lodge and scout the river with time to park and play. On day two you’ll paddle the 8-mile, lush gorge and the clear waters of the Nantahala River. This trip offers plenty of practice on Class II rapids before culminating in the exciting Class III Nantahala Falls. Day three includes a morning paddle of the gorge before heading back to reality. Fee includes two breakfasts, two lunches, equipment, transportation, bunkhouse lodging and professional river guides. Dinner will be on your own during travel and while at the center. We’ll be on the New River searching for brilliant fall colors. Location will depend on water levels. This class includes transportation, all equipment and dry bags along with guides and instruction.   17. MOUNTAIN TREKKERS HIKING CLUB Join us for some great fun, good exercise and an opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors. A chance to learn about the area in which we live, both legend and folklore! The hikes are easy to moderate in terrain and 2 – 4 miles in length. Register for five hikes and receive a $10 discount on your next scheduled hike! New hiking club participants must participate in a Level I hike for assessment and to establish hiker level of participation. Assessing the right hike for you can enhance your experience out on the trail. MCPR’s trail rating system: Level I: Leisurely stroll. Participants at this level will be exercising by walking a couple of miles, stretching your legs and looking to get outdoors for fresh air and sunshine! Trail would consist of flat or gradual terrain and typically a paved or groomed surface. Level II: Moderate exercise. Explore nature off the beaten path by stepping over trail obstacles with root and rock outcroppings, climb and descend moderate uneven terrain, and know your personal limitations. Walking shoes with a cleaved sole are required for this level hike. Level III: Heart Pumping Exercise. Participants in good physical condition and are capable of maneuvering rough, uneven terrain along with elevation gains, loose surface material should be expected. High-top hiking boots or a shoe with ankle support and cleaved sole is required for this level hike. FENWICK MINES Take a leisurely walk along the nature trail through wetlands created by beaver and open forests to see a variety of wildlife and vegetation that live in this environment. Learn about the history of the area and habitat of the region with a guide from the New Castle Ranger District Office. Lunch will feature a picnic in this unique mountain setting. The registration deadline is June 10. $15, lunch and transportation. S. Forest Service that offers diverse habitats along trails that meander through wetlands, hardwood forest, open meadows and pond habitats. You’ll have an opportunity to take a two-mile hike along the wildlife viewing trails or simply explore the homestead. Lunch will be on your own following hike at The Bank Restaurant featuring a freshly prepared menu. These rare mineral crosses are found only in rocks subjected to great heat and pressure and were formed long ago during the rise of the Appalachian Mountains. A picnic lunch will be provided. The event will begin at 10 a.m. and includes music and refreshments. The Blacksburg Library will host a movie presentation at 2 p.m. showcasing the life of Audie Murphy. Attendees will be able to ride a shuttle van or walk the short distance to the monument from the parking area. The class consists of two evenings of classroom training followed by three hours of range instruction. This is an ideal class for men and women who desire more than just basic shoot- ing fundamentals as presented in the Basic Pistol Course or who are serious about acquiring a Concealed Carry Permit with the Commonwealth of Virginia. Mid−County Park The largest park in Montgomery County at 110 acres, Mid-County is home to the Activity Center, the Frog Pond, Golden Hills Disc Golf Course, as well as an extensive nature trail system, and three shelters. The shelters near the Frog Pond share a detached rest room facility as well as a children’s playground. The shelters all have picnic tables, concrete floors, electricity, and grills. The nature trail system extends from the shelters near the Frog Pond approximately two miles around the entire park. The trail system is divided into two linking loops. The Frog Pond The Frog Pond, Montgomery County’s only outdoor public pool, is a beach-entry leisure pool with water slides, fountains, and geysers. The tot’s pool beside the leisure pool provides enjoyment for children under five. The Frog Pond opens yearly the first week of June. The entire facility is available for rental. Golden Hills Disc Golf Course Golden Hills Disc Golf Course is the only eighteen-hole disc golf course in the region. The course boasts tight fairways with severe elevation changes throughout. The wooded area makes for a very challenging course. Monthly meetings of the Hillbilly Huckers Disc Golf Club as well as several amateur and professional tournaments are held here. Huckleberry Trail As a collaborative effort by Montgomery County, Blacksburg and Christiansburg, Huckleberry Trail is an asphalt-paved bike/pedestrian path constructed on the old Huckleberry Rail Line. The trail currently runs from the Blacksburg Public Library to the New River Mall in Christiansburg. The total distance from the library to the mall is 5.762 miles. Connections to the Hethwood Community in Blacksburg are currently being constructed and plans are underway for an eventual connection to the New River State Trail. School Athletic Sites In an agreement made with Montgomery County Public Schools, MCPR programs and maintains a variety of school athletic fields and facilities. MCPR primarily programs fields and facilities at Auburn, Elliston-Lafayette, Price’s Fork, and Shawsville Elementary Schools. Brand new dugouts and fencing were recently installed at Auburn and Shawsville Elementary Schools. Plum Creek Park Located in the western part of the County near the city of Radford, Plum Creek Park features a competition-level baseball/softball field, soccer fields, walking track, brand new play- ground equipment, and a restroom facility. The field is available for rental. McCoy Park Just a 15-minute drive from Blacksburg, McCoy Park features a youth baseball field, a picnic shelter, walking track, and brand new playground equipment. The shelter has picnic tables, concrete floors, and electricity. Both the field and shelter are available for rental. Proposed Parks and Facilities Among the proposed parks are the Coal Mining Heritage Park & Science Center, East Mont Regional Park, Pedlar Hills Nature Preserve, and a sports complex on the former Bethel Elementary School site. Plans for these parks are in the works and construction has begun on a select few. Check back often for updates! 35
