  • 1. DNA Blueprint of Life
  • 2. DNA
    • DNA: Deoxyribonucleic Acid
      • D = deoxyribo
      • N = nucleic
      • A = acid
    • DNA is found in genes on chromosomes in the n ucleus of cells.
    • Humans have 46 chromosomes, 23 pairs of chromosomes
  • 3. DNA Function
    • The chemical basis of life
    • The unit of heredity material
    • Chromosomes are made of genes and genes are made of DNA
    • Carries the genetic code for building an organism
  • 4. DNA Structure
    • Watson and Crick (1953) discovered the structure of DNA
      • Rosalind Franklin
    • Components: Nucleotides
      • Sugar (deoxyribose)
      • Phosphate group
      • Nitrogen Base
        • A = Adenine
        • G = Guanine
        • C = Cytosine
        • T = Thymine
    A – T G - C
  • 5. DNA
    • DNA consists of two strands of twisted nucleotides called a “DOUBLE HELIX”
  • 6. DNA
    • Each nucleotide contains a SUGAR, a PHOSPHATE GROUP, and a NITROGEN BASE.
    • The SUGAR and the PHOSPHATE form the backbone.
    • The NITROGEN bases pair up in the middle.
    • Hydrogen Bonds hold the strand together.
  • 7. DNA Structure
