CURRICULUMReading – 35% Independent Reading Logs – 600 pages each quarter of grade appropriate books Reading quizzes A Christmas Carol, literature circles on the theme of immigration and multicultural literature, selected short stories, poems, non-fiction articles Comprehension strategies Literary terminology

INDEPENDENT READINGIndependent Reading Logs: Students must read 600 pages a quarter for an “A” in Independent Reading. Must be grade appropriate chapter books. Logs are collected at the end of each quarter. Books are logged in after they’ve been finished. Each entry must have a parent signature.

CURRICULUMSpelling and Vocabulary - 20% 12 vocabulary/spelling words & 5 -7 word parts every other week. Words based on a common root , suffixes, and prefixes. Students have to learn how to spell the words correctly, be familiar with the definition, and be able to define the word parts. A practice worksheet goes with each list Pretest on first Friday; test on following Friday.

CURRICULUMGrammar – 20% Parts of speech, punctuation, construction of simple, compound, and complex sentences Proofreading Daily Grammar Safari Grammar worksheets, book assignments, tests

CURRICULUMWriting – 25% Notebook Entries: collected after every 10 entries = 100 points graded on quantity and completeness Essays: fictional or autobiographical narrative persuasive response to literature summary

STAR WRITINGASSESSMENTGiven a topicStudents have one hour to plan, write, &proofreadScored by the state using a 4 point rubricBecomes part of ELA scoresThe high school uses these writing scores forEnglish class placement in 9th grade

GRADESGrades are online and updated everyweek All assignments are returned to the students or kept in portfolios.

HOMEWORK30 minutes of homework Monday throughThursdayStudents should be reading about 15minutes a dayMost assignments are due the next daySome assignments are done over a longerperiod of time in sections(essays, projects,etc.)When students miss three assignments theyare assigned Make-Up Academy and parentsare notified.

HOMEWORKRD = Redo – Students redo someassignments to get full credit.NC = Not corrected – Students mustcorrect their work when we review it inclass or they lose points.ABS = Absent – Students have until the endof the grading period to turn in absent work.LATE = Work turned in after it was due loses40%.
