  2. 2. WHAT ARE SMART PHONES?<br /><ul><li>They are mobile phones with advanced computing abilities and connectivity which is better than an ordinary cellphone.
  3. 3. Feature phones as they are often called are said to be handheld computers with an integrated telephone.
  4. 4. Many smart phones often include characteristics such as a camera and a PDA (personal digital assistant )all in one.
  5. 5. They are in great demand as they offer powerful processors ,abundant memory , some have external display and keyboards, which seem as if though you are working on a laptop.
  6. 6. The first smart phone was the IBM Simon, which was designed in 1992, since then they have been vastly upgraded.</li></li></ul><li>ARGUMENTS FOR SMARTPHONES<br /><ul><li>Organisation: They have electronic diaries, automatic reminders, contact lists, most of them function as your personal organiser.
  7. 7. Faster communication: The internet speed and connection is much faster than your average cellphone, the advanced configurations make emails and internet use much easier.
  8. 8. Pocket size: They are small and easy to carry around, some are slightly bigger than your average mobile phone, but you are basically carrying around a laptop.
  9. 9. Access to data: Because of there sophistication and portability , you can access your files from the office, home, or university at any time, instead of using a laptop.
  10. 10. Better info sharing: Much more info can be obtained from websites or emails, such as large attachments, a ordinary cellphone can only manage emails.</li></li></ul><li>ARGUMENTS FOR SMARTPHONES<br /><ul><li>PRODUCTIVITY: The fast internet connection and email makes it easier for employees to access their info when out of the office.
  11. 11. In the workplace the use of smart phones is essential for professionals and business owners, it increases productivity, as it contains various functions, it keeps individuals connected leading to a more calmer person, making business a 100% easier.
  12. 12. Smart Handheld Devices or SHDs have boost the productivity of the mobile workforce who are finding it much more easier to carry then a laptop.
  13. 13. The SHDs are popular amongst professionals with this compact device they can receive attachments, Excel sheets and create power point slides.
  14. 14. SOCIALLY: Many individuals can now communicate from anywhere in the world to other users using their smart phones on sites like Facebook, Twitter, Myspace etc.
  15. 15. Some have used Twitter and Linked in to find jobs, which is decreasing unemployment.
  16. 16. It increases communication in the office as employees can talk to other individuals at the same time their work is being done, meetings can now be set up by the click of a button and deadlines can be met faster.</li></li></ul><li>STATISTICS<br /><ul><li>Research was conducted by Research In Motion on the use of blackberrys and other smart phones by professionals and students. It was said that many students find the use of blackberrys much easier than laptops.
  17. 17. When using the internet for projects and assignments it is much more simple and accessible, they also found that students prefer smart phones because you can communicate through the various options as well as use it for presentations and other means of obtaining info.
  18. 18. A USA Today article conducted a survey and found that the use of smart phones by individuals increases efficiency, reduces stress.
  19. 19. A study done by World Wide Worx showed that 75% of South African companies are providing smart phones to their employees compared to none being used two years ago.
  20. 20. Further research that has been done by Research In Motion shows that 174 million units were sold worldwide in 2009, that is 15% increase to the 155 million sold in 2008.
  21. 21. More smart phones are being used by individuals because of its mobility and efficiency.</li></li></ul><li>RESEARCH ON SMART PHONES<br /><ul><li>The research has been on the efficiency and productivity of businesses and communication in the work place due to smart phones. And has been found from a number of different website which contain valid articles on the topic.
  22. 22. Researchers are mostly business men and women in the corporate world and journalists who write articles and conduct surveys.
  23. 23. The aim of the research was to find out more about smart phones and how they effect society and how they operate. I was also asked to weigh the pro’s and con’s of smart phones and discuss it in my argument.</li></li></ul><li>PICTURES<br />
  25. 25. Yes they are, with the wide variety of smart phones available today the use of laptops and computers are limited. Smart phones offer various uses and options making our daily tasks much easier and simple.
  26. 26. Without the existence of smart phones our lives would be virtually impossible as the efficiency and simplicity would no longer be available.
  27. 27. They are indeed a necessity and at times go unnoticed at the major impact they have on our lives.
  28. 28. I do not agree that smart phones affect our lives in a negative way, in fact they have rather improved and bettered our lives.
  29. 29. If one thinks back to a few years back, when the use of smart phones were limited, our basic activities were rather difficult to achieve, we were forced to stick to using desktop computers, now in the technologically advanced era we are living in everything is just a click away no matter where you are situated.
  30. 30. I personally prefer the use of smart phones and I am sure many would agree. A smart phone is the best man made design as far as technology goes.
