In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

In order to create our A2 Media Portfolio we needed to firstly perform some research, this would give us an idea of what was necessary in a successful movie trailer, poster and magazine cover. For the main task the research which was undertaken did not solely consist of looking and analysing movie trailers, there was more to it.

We had to research and understand the conventions of a movie trailer for example which essential elements are required, like the credits and production company name, without these two things the trailer would look amateur and unprofessional.

Movie Trailer

It can be said that our movie trailer conforms the convention of a real horror trailer, this is through the use of light and dark to evoke horror into the audience in the early scenes of the trailer the characters are enjoying fun and happy moments which is in the daylight, once the darkness sets things start to change, this is at the point where Georgia states “What if something bad happens out here” this immediately evokes the audience to feel slightly on edge and curious as to what may happen, an element which is often used in horror trailers .

The use of beautiful female main characters is another typification which we have used in our trailer, looking at our research it was clear that there were “scream queens” such as Paris Hilton in the House of Wax. I have used Catherine Long and Georgia Lateo, these two girls have long hair, are slim and convey the stereotypical elements of beautiful people.

Movie Trailer

The use of sound within the trailer mirrors conventions of real media forms, we have used silence in order to create suspense for the audience, we have the use of the creaking door which gives an eerie effect, there is the sound of a motorbike which also could be mistaken for a chainsaw which again helps with adding the sense of fear and mystery.

Movie Trailer

Camera angles When it came to filming our trailer I think that we challenge the forms of most real media products. After looking closely at several horror movie trailers we noticed how they were all filmed in the normal way, this was except the Blair Witch Project which was based on self filmed footage that was found, we decided that this would probably be a wise idea for us as well giving the equipment which we had access to. I believe this was a risk and is something out of the norm for a film trailer.

Movie Trailer

The use of Blank screens and shots of text are something which are always used in horror films as it sets the scene and prepares the audience.

Movie Trailer

Like the film trailer I believe that the movie poster is something that replicates real media products. This is through many elements, such as text styles and colours in my research I discovered that block, red font is the most popular and therefore I decided that this is what I shall use.

Movie Poster

My movie magazine cover mirrors real media products with the use of conventional features such as barcode, date, price, website, masthead, main image and other articles.

Magazine Cover
