Above all, this is more than enough todemonstrate its excellence that our Beloved and Blessed Prophet‫ اﷲ ﺗَﻌَﺎﱃ ﻋَﻠَﻴْﻪ واٰﻟِﻪ وﺳﻠَّﻢ‬ʄ‫ ﺻ‬declared it as ‘My month.’ ٖ ِ َ َ َ ٰ ُ َّ َ َۡ َThere are five Arabic letters in the word ‘‫ ا ,ب ,ع ,ش :’شعبان‬and ‫.ن‬ ٰ ِ ُ َْ َHis Saintly Highness Sayyidunā Ghauš-ul-A’ẓam ‫ رﲪﺔ اﷲ ﺗَﻌَﺎﱃ ﻋَﻠَﻴْﻪ‬hasexplained these five alphabets of Sha’bān as: ‘‫ ش‬Stands for Sharaf(Nobility), ‫ ع‬for ‘Ulūww (Ascension), ‫ ب‬for Birr (Kindness andBenevolence), ‫ ا‬for Ulfat (Affection) and ‫ ن‬for Nūr (light); so َّ َ ّ َthese are the virtues with which Allah ‫ ﻋﺰَوﺟﻞ‬bestows His servants َin this blessed month.In this month, vistas for good deeds are opened, blessings areshowered, wrongdoings are forgiven, expiation is paid for sinsand Ṣalāt is invoked extensively upon the Beloved Prophet‫  اﷲ  ﺗَﻌَﺎﱃ  ﻋَﻠَﻴْﻪ  واٰﻟِﻪ  وﺳﻠَّﻢ‬ʄ‫ ,ﺻ‬and this is the month of sending Ṣalāt upon ٖ ِ َ َ َ ٰ ُ َّ َthe Most Exalted Prophet ‫  اﷲ  ﺗَﻌَﺎﱃ  ﻋَﻠَﻴْﻪ  واٰﻟِﻪ  وﺳﻠَّﻢ‬ʄ‫( ’.ﺻ‬Ghunya-tuṭ-Ṭālibīn, ٖ ِ ََ َ ٰ ُ َّ َpp. 341-342, vol. 1) َۡ ّٰFervour of the Prophet’s Companions ‫ُ عنهم‬ ۡ ُ َ ِ َ ‫رض ا‬ ِSayyidunā Anas bin Malik ‫  اﷲ  ﺗَﻌَﺎﱃ  ﻋـﻨْﻪ‬ʝ‫ ر‬has stated, ‘Upon the ُ َ ٰ ُ َ َvery sight of the moon of Sha’bān, the Companions ‫ اﷲ ﺗَﻌَﺎﱃ ﻋـﻨْﻬﻢ‬ʝ‫ر‬ ِ ۡ ُ َ ٰ ُ َ َwould hold their attention towards recitation of the Holy Quran, 3
  • The Month of My Prophetpay the Zakāĥ of their wealth so that the weak and the poorcould also make arrangement for the fasting of the month ofRamadan. The governors would summon the prisoners to carryout the sentence on convicted and would set those free whomthey consider justified otherwise. Traders would pay back theirdebts and collect their dues. (In this way, they would getthemselves relieved [from liabilities] before the appearance ofthe moon of Ramadan) and upon the very sight of the moon ofRamadan, they (some of them) would observe I’tikāf1 havingperformed Ghusl (Ritual Bath).’ (Ghunya-tuṭ-Ṭālibīn, pp. 341, vol. 1)Conduct of the Muslims Nowadays‫ﻪ ﻋﺰَوﺟﻞ‬ˠȹ ‫!ﺳـﺒْﺤـﻦ  اﻟـﻠ‬َّ َ َ ّ َ How enthusiastic and zealous those Muslims of َ ٰ ُ َّ َ ّ َearlier times were in worshiping Allah ‫ !ﻋﺰَوﺟﻞ‬But sadly the َpresent day Muslims are interested mostly in hoarding wealth. The earlier Muslims who had a Madanī-mindset would spendtheir time worshipping extensively on holy occasions so as to َّ َ ّ َseek the closeness of Allah ‫.ﻋﺰَوﺟﻞ‬ َNowadays Muslims spend these blessed days especially themonth of Ramadan, scheming new ways for coining the َّ َ ّ َloathsome wealth of this world. • The Month of My Prophetand it was referred as the whole (i.e. the fasts of whole month). It is usually said, ‘Such and such person worshipped the wholenight’; although he would have spent time in eating and answeringhis needs. In such cases, ‘mostly’ is referred as ‘wholly.’ ٰ ِ ُ َْ َHe ‫ رﲪﺔ اﷲ ﺗَﻌَﺎﱃ ﻋَﻠَﻴْﻪ‬further stated: From this Ḥadīš we learn that onebearing capability should observe fasts extensively. However, the one who is weak should not fast as it may affect his capabilityto fast in the month of Ramadan adversely. Same objective hasbeen predicated in those Aḥadiš in which it was stated, ‘Do notfast after the first half of Sha’bān.’ (Sunan-ut-Tirmiżī, Ḥadīš 738) -(Nuzĥa-tul-Qārī, pp. 377-380, vol. 3)Promotion of Fasts by Dawat-e-IslamiIt is stated on page 1379 of Faizān-e-Sunnat, comprising of1548 pages, published by Maktaba-tul-Madīnaĥ, the publishingorgan of Dawat-e-Islami: Ḥujjat-ul-Islam Imām Muhammad ِ ِ ُ َ ْ َ ِ َbin Muhammad bin Muhammad Ghazālī ‫ـﻪ  اﻟـۡﻮاﱃ‬ȹ‫ ﻋـﻠ َـﻴ ۡـﻪ  رﺣـﻤـﺔ  اﻟـﻠ‬has َstated, ‘In the above mentioned blessed Ḥadīš, fasting thewhole month of Sha’bān means to fast for the most of the daysof Sha’bān (i.e. to observe fasts in more than half of the days ofSha’bān). How critical the 15th night of Sha’bān-ul-Mu’aẓẓam is! No one knows what will be predestined for him.Sometimes, a person is heedlessly busy in his activities whilemishaps are destined for him. It is stated in Ghunya-tuṭ-Ṭālibīn,‘The shrouds of many people are washed and prepared but theyare busy wandering around in the markets. • The Month of My ProphetThe Deprived PeopleDear Islamic brothers! Shab-e-Barā-at is a vital night and itmust not be spent carelessly. Downpour of special blessings is َّ َ ّ َshowered in this holy night. In this night, Allah ‫ ﻋﺰَوﺟﻞ‬frees people َfrom Hell in a number more than that of hairs on the goats ofthe tribe of Banī Kalb. It is recorded in books that the tribe ofBanī Kalb possessed the largest number of goats among thetribes of Arabia.Alas! There are some unfortunate people who have been declaredto remain deprived of forgiveness in Shab-e-Barā-at i.e. the ِ َ ِ ُ َ ْ َ ِ َnight of rescue. Shaykh Imam Bayĥaqī Shāfi’ī ‫ـﻪ  اﻟـۡﻘـﻮی‬ȹ‫ﻋـﻠَﻴْﻪ  رﺣـﻤﺔ  اﻟـﻠ‬has reported in ‘Faḍāil-ul-Awqāt’: The Prophet of Raḥmaĥ, theIntercessor of Ummaĥ ‫ اﷲ ﺗَﻌَﺎﱃ ﻋَﻠَﻴْﻪ واٰﻟِﻪ وﺳﻠَّﻢ‬ʄ‫ ﺻ‬has alarmed, ‘Six persons ٖ ِ ََ َ ٰ ُ َّ َwill not be pardoned even in that night:1. (Faḍāil-ul-Awqāt, pp. 130, vol. 1, Ḥadīš 27)Similarly, soothsayer, magician, the one who dangles his Shalwāror Taĥband below the ankles out of arrogance, and the one whobears hatred and malice for another Muslim have been alarmed 12
  • The Month of My Prophetfor being deprived of forgiveness. If someone has been indulgedin any of the above mentioned sins should repent from thecore of his heart for that particular sin and for all the sins ingeneral as well before the advent of Shab-e-Barā-at; rather heshould firmly repent right now without any delay. • The Month of My ProphetThe Prevalent Fireworks Related toShab-e-Barā-at are ḤarāmRegretfully this sinful tradition of fireworks on the eve of Shab-e-Barā-at is proliferating among Muslims. It is stated in ‘IslāmīZindagī’: Muslims waste millions of rupees in practicing thistradition and every year many cases are reported that so manyhouses burnt down due to the fireworks and so many personsburnt to death. This sinful activity is a serious risk for life, wealthand assets.Further it is just putting one’s own wealth to fire and in return, َّ َ ّ َgetting the burden of disobedience of Allah ‫ ﻋﺰَوﺟﻞ‬upon the َ َّ َ ّ َshoulders. For the sake of Allah ‫ !ﻋﺰَوﺟﻞ‬Refrain from committing َthis absurd and Ḥarām act, and prevent your children and relativesas well. Wherever some uncultured children set off fireworks,do not stay to spectate such scenes. (Islāmī Zindagī, p. 78)Setting off the fireworks on Shab-e-Barā-at is, no doubt, wastageof money and extravagance; therefore this act is Ḥarām andimpermissible. Likewise production, selling and purchasing offireworks are all prohibited as per Sharī’aĥ. However, there are somespecific permissible forms of fireworks as well. Inspiring Ijtimā’ of Shab-e-Barā-atIf one is desirous to increase the fervour for worshiping on thenight of Shab-e-Barā-at, to refrain from sinful acts like settingfireworks in this holy night and wants to become a pious Muslim,he should embrace the Madanī environment of Dawat-e-Islami,the global, non political movement for propagation of Quranand Sunnaĥ. One should travel three days every month in theSunnaĥ-Inspiring Madanī Qāfilaĥ with the devotees of Prophetand should tend to transform his life according to the guidelinesof Madanī In’āmāt. For enticement, two inspiring Madanīmarvels are being mentioned. The extract from writings of anIslamic brother of Markaz-ul-Auliyā, Lahore (Pakistan) regardingrevolutionary reforms in his life is as under. Before embracing the Madanī environment of Dawat-e-Islami,the global, non political movement for propagation of Quranand Sunnaĥ, I had been availing the company of the misledsect and was involved in a variety of sinful activities. The Prophet of mankind, the Peace of our heart and mind, ٖ ِ ٰ ُ َّ َ the Most Generous and Kind ‫ اﷲ ﺗَﻌَﺎﱃ ﻋَﻠَﻴْﻪ  واٰﻟﻪ وﺳﻠَّﻢ‬ʄ‫ ﺻ‬said, ‘I had َ َ َ prohibited you for visiting graves. Now do visit graves for it causes aversion from worldliness and reminds of the afterlife.’ (Sunan Ibn Mājaĥ, pp. 252, vol. 2, Ḥadīš 1571)2. If one intends to visit a Muslim’s grave (or Mausoleum of َّ َ ّ َ some beloved of Allah ‫ ,)ﻋﺰَوﺟﻞ‬it is Mustaḥab for him to َ firstly offer two Rak’āt Nafl Ṣalāĥ (not in Makruĥ timings) at his home reciting Āyat-ul-Kursī once and Sūraĥ al-Ikhlāṣ thrice after Sūraĥ al-Fātiḥaĥ in each Rak’at and to donate it’s Šawāb to Ṣāḥib-e-Qabr (i.e. the buried person); Allah َّ َ ّ َ ‫ ﻋﺰَوﺟﻞ‬will produce Nūr (light) in the grave of that deceased َ 28
  • The Month of My Prophet person and will reward this person (who donated Šawāb) abundantly. (Fatāwā ‘Ālamgīrī, pp. 350, vol. 5)3. Don’t engage in futile talks while going to visit a mausoleum or a grave. (Fatāwā ‘Ālamgīrī, pp. 350, vol. 5)4. Enter the graveyard via that usual pathway where there had never been graves of Muslims before. Never use the newly carved pathway. It is quoted in Rad-dul-Muḥtār: Walking on a newly carved pathway (that has been built up by levelling the graves) is Ḥarām. (Rad-dul-Muḥtār, pp. 612, vol. 1) Even if there is only overwhelming suspicion regarding new pathway, it is impermissible and sinful to walk on that. (Dur-re-Mukhtār , pp. 183, vol. 3)5. It’s been observed at some mausoleums of beloveds of َّ َ ّ َ Allah ‫ ﻋﺰَوﺟﻞ‬that the flooring is done by demolishing the َ graves of Muslims just to facilitate visitors. Walking, standing, lying down, seating for recitation (of Quran) and invocations etc. upon such floorings is Ḥarām. Recite Fātiḥaĥ remaining distant.6. Beholding the grave should be done whilst standing in َّ َ ّ َ front of the face of the beloved of Allah ‫ ﻋﺰَوﺟﻞ‬and one َ should approach from foot side of him to remain in front of his vision; never approach from head side as he (the buried) would have to turn his head to look. (Fatāwā Razawīyyaĥ, pp. 532, vol. 9) 29
  • The Month of My Prophet7. Stand in the graveyard with back towards the Holy Qiblaĥ and facing the face of the buried and then invoke: ۡ ُ ۡ َ ۡ ُ َ َ َ ّٰ ُ ِ ۡ َ ۡ ُ ُ ۡ َ ۡ َ ۡ ُ ۡ َ َ ُ َ َّ َ ‫السم عليكم يَـا اهل القبورِ يغفرا ُ لَا ولكم انـتم‬ ۡ َ ۡ ُ ۡ َ َّ ٌ َ َ َ ‫لَا سلـف ونن ب ِاثر‬ Translation Salutation be upon you all, O inhabitants of the graves, َّ َ َ َّ may Allah ‫ ﻋَﺰوﺟﻞ‬forgive us and you. You came (here) before us and we are about to come after you. (Fatāwā ‘Ālamgīrī, pp. 350, vol. 5)8. One who invokes this on entering the graveyard: ۡ َ َ َ ۡ َّ َ ۡ ۡ َ ۡ َ ۡ َّ َ َّ ُ ّٰ َ ِ ِ ِ َِ َ ِ َ ‫اللهم رب اجسادِ الالَةِ والعظام الَّخـرة ِ الـت خرجـت‬ َ ۡ ۡ ّ ً ۡ َ َ ۡ َ َ ۡ ۡ َ ٌ َ ٔ ۡ ُ َ َ ِ َ َ ۡ ُّ َ ‫مِن النيا وه ب ِك مومِنة ادخِل عليها روحا مِـن عِنـدك‬ ِ ّۡ ّ ً َ ََ ‫وسما مِن‬ ِ Translation َّ َ َ َّ َّ َ َ ّ َ O Allah ‫ ﻋَﺰوﺟﻞ‬O the Rab ‫ ﻋﺰَوﺟﻞ‬of decayed bodies and ruined bones! (Dur-re-Mukhtār, pp. 183, vol. 3)10. Agarbattī (incense sticks) should not be lit upon the grave as it is a discourteous act and it causes discomfort to the corpse; however if it is desired to spread fragrance for the comfort of the visitors, it should be lit up beside the grave on free land, as perfuming is commendable. (Derived from Fatāwā Razawīyyaĥ, pp. 525,582, vol. 9) ٰ ِ ُ َْ َ On another place, A’lā Ḥaḍrat ‫ رﲪﺔ  اﷲ  ﺗَﻌَﺎﱃ  ﻋَﻠَﻴْﻪ‬has stated: It is quoted in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim Sharīf through Sayyidunā ‘Amr ِ bin ‘Āṣ ‫  اﷲ  ﺗَﻌَﺎﱃ  ﻋـﻨْﻪ‬ʝ‫ ر‬that he advised his son at the time of ُ َ ٰ ُ َ َ death, ‘When I die, do not let any lamenting woman or any fire accompanying my funeral.’ (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, pp. 75, Ḥadīš 192) 31
  • The Month of My Prophet11. Do not place lamp or incense sticks upon the grave for it is fire and placing fire upon grave teases the corpse; however if it is required for purpose of providing lighting to the passers-by, candle or lamp may be placed beside the grave on the free land.In order to learn thousands of Sunnaĥ, buy Part 16 of ‘Baĥār-eSharī’at’ consisting of 312 pages and ‘Sunnatayn or Aadab’comprising of 120 pages and read them.
