  • Translated by Al-hayaa Hamnah HikingCompiled bythe_middle_road
  • Dedicated to all of my teachers. This is the work of your student’s students, and as such I make dua that you be granted a share in its reward, by virtue of your having been their teacher’s teacher.
Actions are but by intentions and every man shall have what he intended…” (Ṣaḥīḥ Bukhārī and Muslim)
  • ForewordA long time ago now, we students embarked upon an online course entitled “as-Sabīl ilāTafhīm al-Waḥī – The Road to Understanding the Revelation”, in order to learn how tounderstand the Book of Allah without needing a translated copy to hand. Back then, classes were conducted once a week in a two-hour session on a Saturday or Sundaymorning – a small sacrifice for some precious knowledge, as it seemed back then. Littledid we know that this course would tie us all together for just over two years, and that inthe end we would be privileged to produce such a piece of work as this one (as well asattending class four times in one week!).For over a year we participated in these classes, learning the ins-and-outs of Arabicgrammar and morphology by memorising tables, translating short passages of the Qur‟ān,and even studying a little bit of Arabic poetry. And alḥamdulillahi rabbil ‘ālamīn, duringthis time we managed to attain a certain amount of proficiency in understanding andtranslating the Arabic language. Cue our final assessment – our mission, should wechoose to accept it, was to translate a few aḥādīth, in order to find out just how much wehad actually learnt. For almost a year we laboured on this project, with our weekly sessions now taking on adifferent format to the classes. Whereas before we had been sitting and listening to theteacher, we now began to translate independently and edit the translations collectively.Who knew that translating could be such an arduous process? We spent months doingthis, trying to remember grammar rules, arguing semantics, and staring intently at thecomputer screen in our attempts to ascertain exactly where to place the full stop (or thesemi-colon, as it so often happened). And then changing our minds and switching itaround all over again...
  • By the mercy of Allah – and after a long and fraught yet enlightening and ultimatelyrewarding process – we have finally managed to complete what we originally set out todo: translating and compiling the book that you now have before you.As ever, all that is good in this book is from Allah , and any mistakes within belong tous. We ask Allah to reward all of the people who made this book possible: first andforemost our teacher, the_middle_road, for creating and conducting the course withouthelp or reward; Abu Mus„ab and Al-Farooq for their creative and knowledgeable input;and all those who supported us along the way. We also ask Allah, Most Mighty andMajestic, to accept our efforts and to make this book a benefit to the Muslim ummah, allahumma āmīn.Hiking(25th Dhul-Ḥijjah 1433 / 10th November 2012)
  • IntroductionAll praise is due to Allah, the Cherisher and Sustainer of the entire universe. And thepeace and blessings of Allah be upon Muh ̣ammad , his family and his companions. The Prophet said, “I have only been sent to perfect the standards of good character.”(Majma„ az-Zawā‟id) He had the most beautiful and perfect character, and it was theway he behaved and interacted with others that won their hearts over and brought theminto the dīn of Islam. As his followers, it is only befitting for us that we should strive ouroutmost to mould our own character on the lofty standard he has set for us. We shouldadorn ourselves with the beautiful qualities and traits he possessed, and through so doingbecome a reflection of his beauty. Each one of us is supposed to be a copy of him in theway we conduct ourselves, so that when people see us, they see him – in some tiny, minisclue way. This aspect of the dīn, of having noble and refined moral character, is by no means aminor issue. It was heavily emphasised by the Messenger of Allah who said, “Indeed, from the best of you are those who have the most beautiful character.” (Ṣaḥīḥ Bukhārī)Another version states, “Indeed, from amongst you, the most beloved to me are those whohave the most beautiful character.” (Ṣaḥīḥ Bukhārī) The reward that it carries is also verygreat, as he has informed us: “There is nothing more weighty in the scale of good deedsthan having beautiful character.” (Sunan Abū Dāwūd) This issue should thus not bebelittled or neglected but be given the importance it deserves. It was for this purpose of helping us attain beautiful character that this book wascompiled. It is a compilation of forty aḥādīth, which cover some of the qualities whichconstitute beautiful character. This is by no means a comprehensive list of all noble traits, but merely a selection of some of the more important ones. There are fifteen qualities intotal, with three aḥādīth being related regarding each one.
  • This book shouldn‟t be approached in the manner that other books are, where one reads itfrom beginning to end in one go. Rather, try and open it each day or every other day andread just one ḥadīth or one chapter. Then try and implement it by endeavouring to bringthat particular quality into your life. One way in which I have been using this text, and a way in which I hope others will use itas well, is for ta‘līm: which is where after the ṣalāh one person reads out a ḥadīth to therest of the congregation. In order to facilitate this, the majority of the aḥādīth that havebeen selected for inclusion in the book are very short and hopefully easy to understand, without requiring much explanation or elaboration. All of the aḥādīth are, to the best ofmy knowledge, either ṣaḥīḥ (authentic) or ḥasan (good), unless otherwise stated as beingḍa‘īf (weak).A check-list has been included at the end of the book for the purpose of self-reflection.We ought to assess ourselves in order to determine which of these qualities we alreadypossess and which areas we are lacking in and need to improve on – and then start towork on trying to change that.We ask Allah to make it easy for all of us to adorn ourselves with all of these beautifulqualities, and thus become true representatives of the Beloved Messenger of Allah .the_middle_road(26th Dhul-Ḥijjah 1433 / 11th November 2012)

Note that He is not literally in the heavens, exalted be He above that, as He is notconfined by His creation. It could also be referring to the angels, in which case it means that they willsupplicate to Allah to have mercy on you. 1
