  • Method of Funeral Ṣalāĥ www.sirat-e-mustaqeem.comForgiveness of Funeral ParticipantsDear Islamic brothers! Did you notice how beneficial participationin the funeral Ṣalāĥ of the pious people is! Whenever we get achance or even better, making effort to get such a chance, weshould participate in funeral Ṣalāĥ of the Muslims. Ourparticipation in funeral of a pious person may bring about ourforgiveness in the Hereafter. How immense Allāĥ’s mercy is!He forgives not only the deceased but also the attendees of hisfuneral! Therefore, Ḥaḍrat Sayyidunā ‘Abdullāĥ bin ‘Abbās     ʝ reports that the Holy Prophet   ٖ   ʋ      ʄ said,“The very first reward given to the true believer on his death isthat all the participants of his funeral Ṣalāĥ are forgiven.”(Shu’ub-ul-Imān, V7, P7, Ḥadīš No. 258)First Gift in the GraveA blessed Ḥadīš of the Exalted Prophet   ٖ   ʋ      ʄ says,“When a true believer enters his grave, the very first gift givento him is that all the participants of his funeral Ṣalāĥ are forgiven.”(Kanz-ul-‘Ummāl, V15, P595)The Funeral of a Heavenly PersonThe Holy Prophet   ٖ   ʋ      ʄ said, “When a Heavenlyperson passes away, Allāĥ has shyness from punishingthose who carried the bier of that person and those whofollowed the funeral procession and those who offered hisfuneral Ṣalāĥ.” (Al-Firdaus bimā Šūr-ul-Khiṭāb, V1, P282) 4

Each Qīrāṭ isequivalent to mount Uḥud. There is one Qīrāṭ Šawāb for theperson who returns after funeral Ṣalāĥ (without participationin the burial).” (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, V1, P307)The Funeral Ṣalāĥ has AdmonitionḤaḍrat Sayyidunā Abū Żar Ghifārī     ʝ narrated that thebeloved and blessed Prophet   ٖ   ʋ     ʄ said to me, “Visitthe graves, it will remind you of the Hereafter and bathe thedeceased as touching the mortal body (dead body) is a greatlesson and offer the funeral Ṣalāĥ so that it makes you gloomy, for a gloomy person is under the shadow of Allāĥ anddoes pious deeds.” (Al-Mustadrak-lil-Ḥākim, V1, P11, Ḥadīš 71435) 5

  • Method of Funeral Ṣalāĥ www.sirat-e-mustaqeem.comTo Offer Funeral Ṣalāĥ whilst Standing uponShoesIn case of offering the funeral Ṣalāĥ wearing the shoes, theshoes as well as the part of the earth beneath them must bepure, while, in case of offering the Ṣalāĥ placing the feet uponthe shoes having taken them off, the purity of the sole of theshoes and the ground is not necessary. In reply to a question,A’lā Ḥaḍrat ʋ    says, ‘If the place was impure due to urineetc. or those who offered the Ṣalāĥ wearing such shoes whosesoles were not pure, their Ṣalāĥ would not be valid. It is,therefore, safer to offer the Ṣalāĥ keeping the feet upon shoeshaving taken them off so that the Ṣalāĥ would not be affectedeven if the sole of the shoes or the earth beneath is impure.’(Fatāwā-e-Razavīyyaĥ, V9, P188)Funeral Ṣalāĥ in AbsentiaPresence of corpse in front is necessary. Funeral Ṣalāĥ in absenceof corpse can not be valid. (Durr-e-Mukhtār, Rad-dul-Muḥtār, V3, P123)It is Mustaḥab for the Imām to stand in front of the chest ofthe corpse. (Marāqil falāḥ ma’ Ḥāshiya-tuṭ-Ṭaḥṭāwī, P583)Method of Offering Joint Ṣalāĥ for More than oneFuneralṢalāĥ of several funerals may be offered jointly. It is optional toeither place the corpses parallel such that chest of all remain infront of the Imām or place them in a queue such that the feet 10
  • Method of Funeral Ṣalāĥ www.sirat-e-mustaqeem.comof the one corpse are towards head of the other and so on.(Baĥār-e-Sharī’at, Part 4, P157)How many Rows should there be in Funeral Ṣalāĥ?It is better to have three Ṣafs (rows) in the funeral Ṣalāĥ as it ismentioned in Ḥadīš, “The one whose (funeral) Ṣalāĥ was offeredby three Ṣafs, he will be forgiven.” (Jāmi’-e-Tirmiżī, Vol-1, P22) If thereare only 7 people, one should become Imām, three should standin the first Ṣaf, two in the second Ṣaf and one in the third Ṣaf.(Ghunya-tul-Mustamlī, P541) In the funeral Ṣalāĥ, the last Ṣaf isgreater than all other Ṣafs, i.e. the Šawāb of offering funeralṢalāĥ in the last Ṣaf is greater than offering in any other Ṣaf.(Durr-e-Mukhtār, Rad-dul-Muḥtār, V3, P131)If One Missed Some part of CongregationalFuneral Ṣalāĥ, then…The Masbūq (the person who has missed some of the Takbīrāt)will say his remaining Takbīrāt after the Imām has performedSalām on either side. If he suspects that the people would carrythe bier up to the shoulders in case of reciting supplicationsetc., he should just utter Takbīrāt and leave out the supplicationsetc. (Ghunya-tul-Mustamlī, P537) If a person comes after the fourthTakbīr, he may join the Ṣalāĥ (before the Imām performs Salām),utter Takbīr three times after Imām’s Salām (Durr-e-Mukhtār, Rad-dul-Muḥtār, Vol-3, P136) and then perform Salām.  ʄ ʋ   ʄ     ʏ  ʄ ʋ 11

(Derived from Ḥāshiya-tuṭ-Ṭaḥṭāwī, P587) The funeral Ṣalāĥ of the one who committedsuicide will be offered. (Durr-e-Mukhtār, Vol-3, P108)Rulings Pertaining to a Dead InfantIf a Muslim’s baby was born alive i.e. he was alive whilst most partof his body was out (during birth) and then died, he will be bathed, shrouded and his funeral Ṣalāĥ will be offered. Otherwise, he willbe washed (ritual bath not required), wrapped in a cloth and buried.Ritual bathing, coffin and funeral Ṣalāĥ are not required for himaccording to Sunnaĥ. If the baby’s head comes out first, ‘Most part’means from head up to the chest in this case. Therefore, if thebaby’s head came out and he cried but died before coming out upto the chest, his funeral Ṣalāĥ will not be offered. If feet come outfirst ‘Most part’, means from feet up to the waist in this case.Whether the baby is born alive or dead or lost in miscarriage (pre-mature birth), he should be named as he will be resurrected on theDay of Judgement. (Durr-e-Mukhtār, Rad-dul-Muḥtār, Vol-3, P152)Šawāb of Carrying the Bier on ShouldersIt is stated in Ḥadīš, “Whoever carries the bier on shoulder andwalks 40 steps, 40 of his major sins will be forgiven.” (Al- Ṭabarānī-fil-Awsaṭ, V4, P260, Ḥadīš No. 5920) It is also mentioned in Ḥadīš 12
  • Method of Funeral Ṣalāĥ www.sirat-e-mustaqeem.comthat the one who carries the bier on shoulder from all four posts (offuneral bier) will be granted Ultimate Forgiveness by Allāĥ .(Al Jauĥarat-un-Nayyīraĥ, V1, P139)Method of Shouldering the BierIt is an act of worship to carry the bier on shoulder. (Tātār Khāniyaĥ,V2, P150) It is Sunnaĥ to carry the bier on shoulder from all fourcorners one after the other and walk 10 steps at each side. Thecomplete Sunnaĥ is to first carry the bier on shoulder from theright head side of the bier, then the right foot side, then the lefthead side and then the left foot side and to walk 10 steps eachtime thus making a total of 40 steps. (Marāqil falāḥ ma’ Ḥāshiya-tuṭ-Ṭaḥṭāwī, P604) Some people announce in the funeral procession towalk two steps each. They should instead announce, “Carry thefuneral on shoulder from all four sides and walk 10 steps each time.”Method of Carrying the Bier of a ChildIf a single person carries the body of a young child in his armsand the rest of the people take the child in their arms in turn, there is no harm in it. (Al-Baḥr-ur-Rā-aiq, V2, P335) It is impermissibleand forbidden for a woman to walk along in the funeral procession(whether it is the funeral of young or old). (Durr-e-Mukhtār, Rad-dul-Muḥtār, Vol-3, P162)Rulings of Returning after the Funeral ṢalāĥWhoever accompanied the funeral should not return home withoutoffering the funeral Ṣalāĥ; after the Ṣalāĥ, he may return seekingpermission from the family-members of the deceased person. 13
  • Method of Funeral Ṣalāĥ www.sirat-e-mustaqeem.comThere is no need to ask permission for returning after the burial.(‘Alamgīrī, Vol-1, P165)Can a Husband Carry the Bier of his Wife? The husband is allowed to carry his wife’s bier on his shoulder, lower her in the grave for the burial and see her face. He isprohibited only from bathing his wife and directly touching herbody (without cloth etc. in between). (Durr-e-Mukhtār, Rad-dul-Muḥtār,Vol-3, P105) A woman can bathe her husband. (Durr-e-Mukhtār, Rad-dul-Muḥtār, Vol-3, P107)Funeral of a DisbelieverTo participate in the funeral Ṣalāĥ or funeral procession of aMurtad (apostate) or disbeliever considering it as a permissibleand worthy of Šawāb act is Kufr. A’lā-Ḥaḍrat Imām AḥmadRazā Khān ʋ    says that if someone attends a Murtad’s ordisbeliever’s funeral Ṣalāĥ believing it as worthy of participation,he will himself become a Kāfir. However, if this is not his beliefthen participation is strictly Ḥarām. It is mentioned in Ḥadīšthat if the funeral of a disbeliever is coming, a Muslim shouldwalk away from it because Satan walks in front of such funeralhappily with a flame of fire in his hand celebrating that hisendeavours became fruitful on that person. (Malfūẓāt, Part 4, P359)Nikāḥ (Marriage) became null and Void!To attend the funeral Ṣalāĥ of a disbeliever or apostate becauseof worldly interests is Ḥarām-e-Qaṭ‘ī and severely Ḥarām. The 14

He should renew his Islam and Nikāḥ. (Derived from Fatāwā-e-Razavīyyaĥ, V9, P173) Allāĥ says in 84th verse of Sūra-tut-Taubaĥ of the Holy Qur’an:   ٖ ö  ʄʋ      ٓ  ʄ ʋ  ‫ ۝‬   ٖ Translation from Kanz-ul-ImānAnd never offer Ṣalāĥ for any of their dead, and never stand by his grave. No doubt, they denied Allāĥ and His Messenger, and died while they were in transgression (infidelity). (Sūraĥ Taubaĥ, Āyaĥ 84)Commenting on the foregoing Āyaĥ, Ḥaḍrat-e-‘Allāmaĥ SayyidNa’īm-ud-dīn Murādābādī ʋ    says, “This Āyaĥ has madeit clear that the funeral Ṣalāĥ of a disbeliever is not permissible atall and it is forbidden to stand besides the grave of a disbelieverfor burial or visit.” (Khazā-ain-ul-‘Irfān, P321)Do not Visit a Sick who is a DisbelieverIt is reported by Ḥaḍrat Sayyidunā Jābir bin ‘Abdullāĥ    ʝthat the Sultan of Madīnaĥ   ٖ   ʋ     ʄ said, “If they fall ill, don’t go to see them, if they die, don’t participate in their funeral.”(Sunan ibn-e-Mājaĥ, Ḥadīš 92, V1, P70) 15
