Introduce yourself & thank the team for making the time to think about Climate Change. Climate change is everywhere – on the TV, the front page of the paper, in schools and possibly also in your home. You might have cut down on the number of carrier bags you use, have changed to long-life lightbulbs or even got a composter. We’re all thinking about it – regardless of what we think about the arguments. It’s on everyone’s agenda. Most importantly it’s on our customers’ agenda and they want us to help them. Lets have a look at what we’ll cover in this session

Scientists believe that global warming is real.
Human beings seem to be responsible.
The 10 warmest years on record have occurred since 1995.
Last winter was the warmest winter ever recorded in the UK.
Weather experts predicted that 2007 would be the hottest year yet.
It is now 0.7 °C hotter than pre-industrial times.
Sounds small, but it was only 4°C cooler during the last ice age. If the planet get a couple of degrees hotter, who knows what might happen.
What is Climate Change?
global average air and ocean temperatures
rising global average sea level
widespread melting of snow and ice
The evidence
What is climate change?
Gases collect in the atmosphere and cause it to trap more of the sun’s warmth.
These gases are often referred to as ‘greenhouse gases’. The term ‘carbon’ is sometimes used as shorthand as most of the gases contain carbon molecules.
The main culprit is Carbon Dioxide (CO 2 ) which is caused by burning fossil fuels (coal, gas and oil) and deforestation.
Methane (CH 4 ) is emitted by landfill sites, rice paddies and in many agricultural processes e.g. raising livestock.
HFCs are synthetic gases invented to replace CFCs – they are used in refrigerators.
Projected impacts of Climate Change
0.7 ˚C
Small glaciers melt
Crop yields in Europe & N. America improve
Some damage to coral reefs
2˚C
Loss of glaciers threaten water supplies in some areas
Increasing ‘intense weather’ e.g. flooding, hurricanes
Further droughts cause crops to fail in developing world, leading to famines
4˚C
Rising number of species unable to adapt & facing extinction
Significant decrease in water availability particularly in developing world
Storms, forest fires, heat waves and floods increasingly commonplace
6˚C
Sea level rise threatens major cities
Falling crop yields in Europe & N. America
Increasing risk of abrupt, large-scale shifts in climate system e.g. Gulf Stream stops
What is Tesco doing? Measuring our impact: The global Tesco business emits 4.1 million tonnes of “carbon” (greenhouse gases) every year. This is our “carbon footprint” Business Travel Group split of emissions by source for 2006/07 57% 25% 11% 6% 1% Grid Electricity Diesel Natural Gas Refrigerant
50% cut in emissions from existing buildings by 2020
50% cut in carbon footprint of all new stores built by 2020
50% cut in CO2 created per case of goods delivered by 2012
