    1. Classifying Structures
      • Objectives:
      •  
      • Given the definitions of sheltering and non-sheltering structures, students will be able to differentiate types of structures into sheltering and non-sheltering structures categories to 85% accuracy
      •  
      • Given the definitions of non-sheltering categories: directing, transporting, containing, and supporting, students will be able to categorize a set of non-sheltering structures into appropriate sub-categories: directing, transporting, containing, and supporting to 85% accuracy.
      •  
      • Given a set of structures that can be classified as two or more categories, students will be able to recognize and identify the main purpose of a structure to 85% accuracy.
    2. Structures
      • Something that is man-made or natural that is designed to serve a purpose, usually on a large scale.
      • Almost everything we encounter in everyday life is a can be defined as a structure.
      • They can be categorized as
      • Sheltering or Non-Sheltering .
        • Take 5:
        • Brainstorm a list of structures.
        • (note-clicking the notepad will open a word doc for you to complete the activity.
        • Save doc as brainstorm.doc. Print a copy for your records.)
    3. Sheltering or Non-Sheltering?
      • Sheltering
        • Protects people, animals, or things from the environment.
        • Ex. House
      • Non-Sheltering
        • Main goal is to not provide protection from the environment.
        • Ex. Dam
    4. Categories of Non-Sheltering
      • Directing
      • Supporting
      • Transporting
      • Containing
        • Take 5:
        • Categorize your list of structures.
        • (Note: return to your brainstorm list of structures)
    5. Directing
      • Stationary structures that are designed to provide pathways to guide people, things, and materials.
      • Examples:
      • Railroad tracks, Pipelines, Tunnels

    7. Transporting
      • Designed to move freight or passengers from one place to another.
      • Examples:
      • Ships, Mobile Homes, Trains

    9. Containing
      • Designed to hold in or contain something.
      • Examples:
      • Dams, Silos, Tanks, Swimming pools

    11. Supporting
      • Designed to hold things up.
      • Examples:
      • Roads, bridges, towers, foundations

    13. Multi-function Structures
      • What happens when structures can be classified as many types of structures?
      • Example: Railroad
      • Supporting : the underlayment is supportive of the weight of the train
      • Directing : the tracks direct the trains movement
      • Transporting : the boxcars are moving materials or people
    14. Train
      • The main purpose of the structure is evaluated.
      • Therefore:
      • Main purpose is to transport goods and people.
