Slide 4: What is Mentoring ? • Mentoring from the Greek word meaning “enduring” is defined as a sustained relationship between a youth and an adult. Through continued involvement the adult (usually older & always more experienced) offers support, guidance and assistance as the younger person goes through a difficult period, faces new challenges, or works to correct earlier problems. Mentoring is thus a development-oriented initiative.

Slide 5: Mentoring is a brain to pick, an ear to listen, and a push in the right direction. John C. Crosby

Slide 6: Three things important • Mentoring • Coaching • Counseling

Slide 7: Mentoring • “Mentors” focus on the individual learner by developing their career or life. They act as friends, willing to play the part of adversary in challenging assumptions. They list and question to encourage the learner to widen their own view : they are happy for ownership and direction of the relationship to lie with the learner and they accept ambiguity as an exciting part of their life, providing the learner with openings for change and autonomy.

Slide 8: Coaching • “Coaching”, by contrast deals with specific problem and performance skills. It is solution- oriented. It focuses on finding solution or at least finding our better ways to cope with specific work related issues. • The Coach explores the problem with learner and sets up opportunities for the leaner to try our new skills : ownership is shared and puzzling out ambiguity is seen as a challenge

Slide 9: Counseling “Counseling” is a part of mentoring but it is not the same thing. While Mentoring is reserved for those who exhibit self-responsibility, Counseling is useful for everyone. Counseling focuses on deep behavioral & emotional issues, on life, needs & desires of the counselee and is designed to have the counselee ultimately help himself by becoming more self responsible. Counseling is part of the role of all good managers.
