THE SKIN The skin is the largest organ in the body covering about 2 square meters. It protects us from injury and infections, water heat and cold. Helps regulate our body temperature, keeping us warn in cold conditions and cool in warm conditions. It absorbs vitamin D from the suns energy.Our Skin Does A Lot To Protect Us So We Should Protect it. • (Irish Cancer Society, 2011)
    3. 3. WHAT IS SKIN CANCER? Skin cancer is the abnormal and uncontrolled growth of cells of the skin. There are 3 types of skin cancer:  Basal Skin Carcinoma  Squamous Skin Carinoma  Melanoma • (National Cancer Institute, 2011)

SKIN CANCER IN IRELAND Between 2007 and 2009 there were 8,053 cases of skin cancer.  720 of these cases were Melanoma (National Cancer Registry, 2011) This makes Skin Cancer IRELANDS MOST COMMON CANCER More common in men (30%) than women(29%) (National Cancer Registry, 2011). This maybe due to more men than women working and playing sports outdoors.
