Tunku Abdul Rahman was Malaysia's first prime minister from 1957 to 1970. He was affectionately known as "Tunku" and was born in 1903 in Alor Setar, Kedah. Tunku excelled in his studies as a child but enjoyed games more. He was sent to study in Bangkok at age 10 but returned to Malaysia after two years when his brother passed away. Tunku later received a scholarship to study in England at Cambridge University, where he was inspired to fight for equality and independence from British rule.

Affectionately known as ‘Tunku’, Tunku Abdul Rahman was loved
for his fine traits of character and humor.
Tunku was born in Alor Setar, Kedah on 8 february 1903. Even as a child, he loved
freedom and mixed with the village children outside the palace walls. as a prince, he was
brought up as a royalty, but after a while he was treated as an ordinary boy, and he enjoyed
being one. At the age of six, he enrolled in a Malay school in Alor Setar. He then continued his
studies in the Government English School.
The little prince was bright in his studies but was more interested in games and boyish
tricks. When he was ten, his mother sent him to Bangkok to play with his eldest brother, Tunku
Yusuf, who was working there. She hoped Tunku Yusuf would be firm with this lovely young
brother.
In Bangkok, Tunku did quite well in Debsurin School, where he made many friends.
Tunku never had problems getting along with people of various races and social backgrounds.
Two years later, Tunku Yusuf passed away, and Tunku had to return to Kedah. He
studoed in a Malay school for a year and then joined the Penang Free School. His interest in
studies was nutured by some excellent teachers. when he was seventeen, Tunku left for
England to further his studies on a Kedah Government Scholarship. there he sta for the
University Entrance Examination and was accepted into St. Catherine’s College, Cambridge
university.
It was there that he had an experience taht inspired him to fight for equality and to free
our country from the British rule.
