  • 16. Power of Compounded Investment • Scenario 1: • Mr. & Mrs. Chan are planning to send their eldest son to university in the United Kingdom (UK) in 10 years. On hand, they know that the average fees & living expenses will amount to a total of RM350k today. Given an estimated inflation rate of 3% in the UK, they will have had to put aside a total of RM28,636 per year/RM2,432 per month in an investment with an average growth rate of 8% to achieve RM448,029 lump sum in 10 years. • Scenario 2: • If Mr. & Mrs. Chan had decided to 20 years in advance, as opposed to 10, to send their son to university in the United Kingdom (UK), given the same variables i.e. average fees & living expenses will amount to a total of RM350k today, estimated inflation rate of 3%, they will have had to put aside a total of RM12,790 per year/RM1,066 per month in an investment with an average growth rate of 8% to achieve RM632,138 lump sum in 20 years.
