3. Background and Purpose.
Fair Trade Laos was established by a small group of motivated business people and
NGOs that recognize the social and economical viability of Fair Trade to improve
producers’ and farmers’ lives and at the same time offer a high-quality product.
Fair Trade Laos is a business initiative. It aims at becoming a self-sustaining service
provider and legitimate representative body for the Fair Trade sector in Laos.
Fair Trade is not a widely known concept in Laos, and becoming certified involves a
long, complex and pricy process. At present, in Laos only few business initiatives are
certified.
The development potential for fair trade in Laos is high. Fair trade could significantly
contribute to the necessary in-country value-adding required to capture its full
development potential.

• organize joint lobby and advocacy in support of an enabling
environment for fair trade
