Background and Purpose.Fair Trade Laos was established by a small group of motivated business people andNGOs that recognize the social and economical viability of Fair Trade to improveproducers’ and farmers’ lives and at the same time offer a high-quality product.Fair Trade Laos is a business initiative. It aims at becoming a self-sustaining serviceprovider and legitimate representative body for the Fair Trade sector in Laos.Fair Trade is not a widely known concept in Laos, and becoming certified involves along, complex and pricy process. At present, in Laos only few business initiatives arecertified.The development potential for fair trade in Laos is high. Fair trade could significantlycontribute to the necessary in-country value-adding required to capture its fulldevelopment potential.
