How does the death penalty work in the U.S.? Marcelus Rodgers Block D
Death penalty• The death penalty, also known as Capital Punishment, is punishment by death for a crime.• 42 people have been executed this year so far.• There are currently 58 people on Federal death row.
Are there flaws in the death penalty?• Discrimination and racial profiling is proof that a new system is needed.• A lifelong prison sentence can prove more cruel than a speedy execution.• Abolishing Capital Punishment would tell the public that our laws are incapable of delivering what most Americans consider genuine justice.

Does race affect punishment?• In the 1980’s the college of law found that 10 of 16 men on death row were minorities.• Of the 58 people on federal death row now, 23 are white, while roughly 35 are minorities.
Does gender affect death penalty?• On average women are arrested for 13 percent of all murders committed in the U.S.• According to the NAACP only 8 women were executed in the U.S. between 1977 and 2001, while 741 men were executed.• “Since 1923, all of the inmates executed in Maryland have been men.” Source: http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/maryland-1
How does being legally insane affect death penalty?• Insanity is a fair defense against murder.• The Supreme Court says executing the insane is unconstitutional.• The insanity defense is seldom attempted and seldom succeeded.
What crimes cause death penalties?• In some cases kidnapping, rape, armed robbery and treason.• Nowadays only first degree murder followed by other factors cause death penalty.
