    • There is no treatment for Down Syndrome
    Introduction
    • Extra Chromosomes-47
    • Occurs when there is an extra copy of chromosome 21
    • The chromosome is called Trisomy 21
    • Causes problems with development of body and brain
    • Normal child outgrows
    What problem with the chromosomes causes Down Syndrome?
    • Down syndrome is a genetic condition in which a person has 47 chromosomes instead of the usual 46.
    • Down syndrome is the most common cause of mental retardation and malformation in a newborn. It occurs because of the presence of an extra chromosome.
    What is Down Syndrome?
    • Survival rate increasing
    • 93% survive the first year
    • 90% survive the first 10 years
    • Live usually until 60 years old
    What is the Life Expectancy?
    • Race
    • Presence of heart defects
    • Low birth weight
    • Need intense medical, finiacial and social support
    • Obesity
    • Weakness of back bones
    What factors affect the survival rate?
    • Small ears, small mouth, and flattened nose
    • Wide, short hands with short fingers
    • Single crease at the palm of hand
    • Slow birth rate
    What are some risk factors?
    • Special education teachers help kids with disorders, such as down syndrome

    • Recent trends in special education include the use of technology to provide essential supports so students with disabilities can access, participate in, and demonstrate progress in the general education standards-based curriculum
