SyllabusEDU614 COURSE DESCRIPTION: Educationaltechnology is an essential learning tool for the 21st centuryclassroom. This course provides an opportunity to exploreand gain working knowledge of current instructionaltechnologies. Class demonstrations and hands-on exerciseswill focus on systems and tools K-12 teachers may find intheir districts and schools. Students will become familiarwith web 2.0 tools and their appropriate use in the K-12classroom. Students will be trained to use assistivetechnology and adaptive communication technology.
ObjectivesStudents will be able to: become technologically literate teachers incorporate appropriate technology and media in lesson planning prepare age appropriate teaching materials using specified technologies understand legal and ethical issues as they apply to responsible and acceptable use of the Internet, educational technology and other resources.

Course StructureThis course will use a hybrid model of in class discussionsand online learning. We will use different applications tohelp you expand the boundaries of teaching and learning inyour classroom or future classroom. This course isdesigned to use computers, the internet and manyplatforms. It is expected that students entering class have aworking knowledge of the computer. If this is not the case,you will need to spend extra time developing the necessarycomputer skills to function effectively on the platforms. Ifyou have a deficiency in these area(s) you need to takecare of this in the first week of the course. You will need tospend some time voluntarily in the lab between classes.Speak to me if you need additional assistance in this area.
You are also expected to have a workingusername and email account. Contact CET ifyou do not have a working account.
Performance AssessmentClassroom Participation(15%): This course is designedto be interactive. The success of the course reliesheavily on student participation, which implies that allclass members will be fully prepared to participate bothin class and on our class Ning. During each classstudents are expected to completely engage in classactivities by exploring the online tools shared. It isexpected that no student will have another websiteopen; this includes email and sites such as Facebook.Cell phone use is for emergency only. If you fail to honorthese guidelines your participation grade will belowered. Unexcused absences will lower yourparticipation grade.
Performance AssessmentTeacher Blog (60%): All course participants will create apersonal Weblog on our Ning Community, The GordonTeacher’s Collaborative. You will be instructed how to addto and maintain your Weblog during the first class session.A blog entry addressing the assignment for each class isdue no later than Tuesday by 5 PM to allow others time toread and comment on your blog. Late submissions willlower your grade. Blog posts should be well developed,thoroughly written entries demonstrating thoughtfulreflection.
Students are expected to write a minimum of 28 (23 arespecified) (For EDU630 a minimum of 30 (26 are specified)blog posts including to but not limited to the following:★Reflections on readings and assignments★Interesting Websites, Blogs or other technological tools★Responses to the reading of blogs through your RSSfeedStudents will offer at minimum three comments per week onthe blog entries of your classmates.
Participants will be shown how to develop an RSS(Really Simple Syndication) on Google. Courseparticipants should maintain an RSS with aminimum of three blogs (from outside the class).In response to three separate blog posts throughthe RSS feed, students will compose a minimum ofthree blog entries.
Final Project & Presentation (25%): With anindividually selected topic (with instructor approval) youwill create a final project and give a twenty-minutepresentation. You must demonstrate proficiency in achosen media environment and application oftechnology. Include at least one of the applications thatyou have learned in this course. Develop, write andsubmit a detailed plan on how you would incorporatethis into your classroom. In your presentation, shareyour plan and explain what 21st century skills areaddressed. Proper attribution and citations must beprovided.
Topics & Assignments A group of posts are due once a week Example: let’s look at the assignment for next week:• Read the blog post: Why Teachers Should Blog. Respond in a blog post.• Read Ch. 1 in Richardson text. Respond in a blog post.• Read Ch. 2 in Richardson text. Respond in a blog post. All blog entries are due by Tuesday at 5 PM. This is an absolute deadline. You may of course post early. This give folks two night for comments.
