  • Legends of Origin
    Plot points
-Poor man had 3 daughtersthat cannot get married
    -Saint Nick heard
    -Poor man wouldn’t take charity
-Saint Nick slipped gold into the girls stockings , while hanging by the fire place to dry
-In the morning the girls found the gold
-They could all then get married and live happily ever after
  • And Then…
Led to custom of kids leaving out their stockings or shoes, hoping for gifts from Saint Nicholas.
Kids used normal socks but then lead to using personalized stockings so saint Nick could know who’s stocking is who’s.
Children often opened in the morning before presents when parents are waking up.
  • Things To Know
Children left clogs filled with straw for Santa’s reindeer ( he left treats in place of the straw)
    Later clogs became stockings
German kids left socks by the fire place to dry
And St. Nicholas would fill socks with 5 gifts
-something to eat (fruit or candy)
    -toys that made noise
-item that is visually pleasing (jewelry coloring book)
-item with a good scent (cologne perfume)
-something soft (like modeling clay or a soft toy)
