The Country and The City <ul><li>New York was under heavy strain by 1740’s due to diverse population </li></ul><ul><li>Racism, slave trade, rebellions ran ramped </li></ul><ul><li>Economic prosperity drew in more merchants </li></ul><ul><li>Stamp Act paved the way for a revolution. </li></ul>

The Country and The City <ul><li>British fought the revolution for 7 years until they surrendered to George Washington </li></ul><ul><li>Alexander Hamilton </li></ul><ul><ul><li>single handedly saved the city after the revolution </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Served as the first secretary of the treasurer </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Persuaded Jefferson to make each state debt a federal debt </li></ul></ul><ul><li>New York became the greatest port in the world </li></ul><ul><li>The Erie Canal brought economic prosperity back to New York. </li></ul>

Order And Disorder <ul><li>By 1825 Manhattan and Brooklyn were made up of country living </li></ul><ul><li>Eerie Canal produced economic boom </li></ul><ul><li>News Papers and journalism began </li></ul><ul><li>First Museum, side shows and circuses. </li></ul><ul><li>Immigrants were arriving by the thousands </li></ul><ul><li>Ethnic conflicts were on the rise </li></ul><ul><li>1845 Great Potato famine hit </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Mass influx onto New York Shores </li></ul></ul>

Order And Disorder <ul><li>Great Migration of the Irish brought in more and more poor people </li></ul><ul><li>Blacks and Irish fought for non-skilled jobs and living space </li></ul><ul><li>Devastating outbreaks of Chorea killed thousands </li></ul><ul><li>Protestant missionaries moved into Irish slums. </li></ul><ul><li>Crime was high due to many orphans roaming the streets </li></ul>

Order And Disorder <ul><li>War brought death and poverty to New York </li></ul><ul><li>$300 bought a person’s freedom under Lincoln </li></ul><ul><li>First Draft began July 12, 1863 </li></ul><ul><li>First Fire Department and Police Department established </li></ul><ul><li>Rioting began </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Rich and elite were targeted </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Blacks were targeted </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Changed New York forever </li></ul></ul>

Merger That Puts New York On Top <ul><li>Will New York City keep its world status as the economic capital. </li></ul><ul><li>the merger of AOL and Time Warner. </li></ul><ul><li>From the beginning of the nation New York has had competitors like Boston, Philadelphia, and New Orleans that were trying to become the leading economic city in America. </li></ul><ul><li>The leaders of New York were always able to predict the nations economic future and stay one step ahead of everybody else. </li></ul><ul><li>The merger between these companies might ensure that New York stays the powerhouse above some of the other emerging cities. </li></ul><ul><li>New York will remain number on top if nobody challenges them. </li></ul>

The Great Transatlantic Migration <ul><li>The United States took in 6 times more migrants than any other country. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Argentina was second. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>America also had the biggest variety of Europeans migrating. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>The United States had cheap land that was zoned and had land laws. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>The Europeans kept to the Northern and western United States, where a African Americans stayed in the south. </li></ul><ul><li>There was much hostility towards the migrants that came and went for the money. </li></ul><ul><li>In 1911 laws started to limit the amount of migrants were who came and left. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>It was finally ended by the Great Depression. </li></ul></ul>
