2. I will be analysing ‘Spectrum’ directed
by Amy Wichelow.
3. Different types of shot

These many different types of shot have helped to create a large amount of variety within the
music video, meaning that audience members will remain entertained throughout the entirety
of the video. The different shots also help to display the story within the video.
4. Different lighting
Lighting to the left and right Lighting in front Lighting behind
As we see in Amy’s video, lighting can be used in different ways to produce different
effects. For example where the lighting is placed to the left and right it darkens the face
model, creating more of an effect on the outline of the body and therefore directing
attention to the costume in this scene as well as the hand movements. Where there is
lighting in front this captivates all audience members attention to the model as well as
fading out the background, giving them a real look at the detail of the model such as
makeup and facial expression. Furthermore when there is lighting behind the model this
creates a ‘warm glow’ look to the model which contrasts to the darker cold lighting when
the lighting is to the left and right, helping to display the different characters in the video,
5. Different costume
Amy employs different styling through costume makeup and hair to include variety in her
video and telling the story through the different characters all played by the same model.
The binary opposites of the waistcoat and dress add parallels to the video and can be
used in different ways where is greatly exposed lighting on the waistcoat and close up
slow motions of the dress twirling – displaying the difference in character.
Both of these are met by the neutral middle character which can be seen as the narrator,
tying the two different characters together by employing elements of the different
characters onto one neutral character. This is done by the dark clothing and makeup onto
the narrator incorporating the dark character to the narrator and the long curly hair of the
more girly character.

6. Setting
Two settings are used, a mystical looking garden and a black background, these two
contrast each other creating dramatic and less dramatic effects, this also helps to build
upon the characters within the music video as the two contrast showing two sides to the
story.
This also helps to ensure differentiation in the video making sure that audience
members do not get bored as shots alternate from the garden to the blacked out room.

7. Props
Props are added to enhance the video such as the repetitive motif of the sparkler
appearing at various points throughout the video, this adds to the video as it plays
with lighting as well as adding cool visuals
As well as a smoke machine being used to create a mysterious look to the black
room, this is highlighted with the use of lighting to really capture the smoke behind
the model.
