  2. @Kern Learning Solutions Scenario-Based Learning Jai, aged 25, is a counselor at Speak Fluent. Currently, he works in the morning shift. His primary role is counseling prospective students. Several prospective students walk into the institute requesting for more information. He has to understand their needs, identify their comfort with the language, and suggest an appropriate package. He has to follow up on leads.
  3. @Kern Learning Solutions Scenario-Based Learning Speak Fluent’s Needs: Currently, the counseling process followed by counselors at Speak Fluent is not systematic and uniform. There is a need to educate the counselors about the various steps of the counseling process and how each is carried out. They also need to understand how different types of personalities need to be handled.
  4. @Kern Learning Solutions Scenario-Based Learning What would you do? Approach 1 List the steps of the counseling process with a good exhaustive list of do’s and don’ts. OR Approach 2 Take the learner through the counseling process using different scenarios. Each scenario can show a specific type of customer and allow the learner to identify the best ways of handling them.
  5. @Kern Learning Solutions Scenario-Based Learning Approach 1 List the steps of the counseling process with an exhaustive list of do’s and don’ts. Sounds simple! Guess I will just by heart the steps and I should be fine… Step 1: Greet an enquiry Step 2: Understanding requirements Step 3: Respond to customer queries Step 4: Closing the sale
  6. @Kern Learning Solutions Scenario-Based Learning What do I typically do? Greet them? Make them feel comfortable? Step 1: Greet an enquiry You see a person standing on the doorway, debating whether he should enter or not. What should you do? Consider the following cues and hints before you respond. (Does he look like a potential walk-in? Does he look nervous, confident, or suspicious?) Approach 2 Take the learner through the counseling process by using different scenarios. Each scenario shows a specific type of customer and allows the learner to identify the best ways of handling them.
  7. @Kern Learning Solutions Scenario-Based Learning Scenario based learning is learning based on situations or contexts. Scenario-based learning is based on situated cognition. This means that learning happens within a defined context. Ann grabs her glass and gulps down the drink in a gulp. Is this appropriate table manners? Etiquette demands that you must sip your drink slowly. Based on the conversation and each individual’s body language, can you identify who is the most attentive in the group? Who was the least attentive? If Rafeeq had not stopped the bus, he would have caused serious injuries to pedestrians and passengers. You must always stop your vehicle at the Stop sign.
  8. @Kern Learning Solutions Scenario-Based Learning What is a Context? Context is the environment or framework within which the content is taught. The context should be familiar to the learner such that he/she can make the necessary connections to aid learning. In this case, the context is a simulated work environment. The learner takes on the role of a counselor in the simulation. He watches the situation unfold and then responds to it.
  9. @Kern Learning Solutions Scenario-Based Learning Characteristics of Scenarios-based Learning Realistic Focuses on applied knowledge Holistic learning Filters out theoretical information Learner centered Makes learner think/reflect Engages the learner High instructional interactivity
  10. Scenario-Based Learning How do I design scenario-based learning? 1. Understand your learners and their realities. 2. Based on your understanding of your learner, the scope of training, and learning objectives, identify the instructional approach. 3. Define the context in which the scenarios will occur. 4. Ensure the context is plausible. Brainstorm to discuss how the course will flow. 6. Work closely with the SME. Ensure that every scenario is validated. 5. Define the testing points upfront.
  11. Scenario-Based Learning 1. Understand your learners and their realities. What interests him? How old is he? What challenges does he face at work? What is his typical day like? Does he really need to learn? How important is this skill or knowledge? What are his motivations? What is his attitude towards learning? What is his work environment like?
  12. Scenario-Based Learning 2. Based on your understanding of your learner, the scope of training, and learning objectives, identify the instructional approach. Learner is required to understand behavioral or attitudinal skills a. Use scenario-based, when: Motivation to learn is low Importance is on applying concepts and not on theoretical information
  13. Scenario-Based Learning b. Two ways to use this approach: Single storyline Series of unrelated scenarios Tasks for the day 1. Identify safety performance issues among team members. 2. Take actions to correct these performance issues. 3. Provide corrective feedback to check performance issues. Proceed 2. Based on your understanding of your learner, the scope of training, and learning objectives, identify the instructional approach.
  14. Scenario-Based Learning 3. Define the context in which the scenarios will occur. Ensure that expectation setting happens right at the beginning. The learner should be aware of what is expected from him.
  15. Scenario-Based Learning 4. Ensure the context is plausible. Brainstorm to discuss how the course will flow. If you are using a single storyline, remember that it should hold for the complete course. If you are using a series of scenarios, ensure that you maintain a clean balance between content slides and scenario slides. Make believe world Home Corporate workspace
  16. Scenario-Based Learning 5. Define the testing points upfront. Testing points can be the backbone of your course if decision making is required at every juncture. (Experiential learning)
  17. Scenario-Based Learning You can have testing points at crucial junctures. Each learning objective has a few testing points. 5. Define the testing points upfront.
  18. Scenario-Based Learning 6. Work closely with the SME. Ensure that every scenario is validated. The more real it is for the learner, the higher impact it will have.
  19. These examples give a glimpse of how you can design simple scenarios to make the course more interesting and easy to relate for the learners. They will be able to see how the content that you are teaching are directly linked to their day to day work. Bad elearning has burnt a few bridges and these kind of courses help break the myth and convince the learner that learning can be interesting, valuable, and worth their time. It provides learners with an opportunity to explore the consequences of their own actions. It gives them the feeling of control over their own learning. Remember, our goal is to ensure that we create courses that make learning fun at the same time enrich our learning experience! Scenario-Based Learning Summary
