Learning = Bowl of Spinach?
How many learners cringe at the sight of a training program?
How many learning professionals actually invest time in learning?
But, the truth is learning to most of us is what spinach is to a kid.

Why do you Learn?
Because…
My boss asked me to do it
I was told that this is my focus area
It is the most ‘in’ thing, u know web 2.0 etc
I have to work better
I want to work better

Persona 1: Know It All
Believes: I do my job well. I know everything I need to do get things right.
Persona 1 hates to learn because he thinks:
he does his job well
he knows all there is to know to do his job right

Persona 2: It’s All About the Money
Believes: I work to earn. Doesn’t matter if I don’t like it too much…
Persona 2 hates to learn because she:
is not passionate about her job
has to work and it doesn’t matter if she likes it or not

Persona 3: No Time to Learn
Believes: I just have too much to do.
Persona 3 hates to learn because he is:
overworked
so busy with work that he can’t imagine getting away from his desk to learn

Persona 4: I know What I Need
Believes: I am the best person to decide what I need to learn.
Persona 4 does not hate to learn but hates to be told what to learn. She knows her strengths and weaknesses.

Where do you fall?

Persona 1
If this is you…
If this is your learner…
Keep your ears open for feedback. You may realize that you can do things better.
Times are changing around you… Do you seriously know everything? Think…
If research shows you that performance gap exists, you need to challenge this learner’s belief.
Give him tasks to check his knowledge. Let him realize that he may not know everything and that he will gain by learning.

Persona 2
If this is you…
Find a job that really interests you. You will do better and you will learn because you want to.
If that is not an option, learn to improve your chances of moving up the ladder.
Use recognition by management, monetary benefits, certificates to encourage her to learn.
Rewards work as the best incentive.

Persona 3
If this is you…
Take a break! Pull your head from under the sand. As you continue to work, the world is changing. Read! Learn!
Ask your boss to give you space for learning. Tell him you will learn only if you are given time away from your desk.
Ask your client to give the learner a two or three-day break from the work environment.
Take him outside, allow him to learn under the sun, and give him the break he deserves. Ensure he has fun, and he will learn.

Persona 4
If this is you…
Congrats! You are in control of your own learning. While this is fine, you must keep your ears open to feedback.
Others may help you identify other areas of improvement.
Give control to the learner. Allow the learner to select her own learning path.
Challenge her if you think she needs to focus on something else. If she sees the need, she will learn.

Love to Learn
Invest time in reading about your work.
Try and catch up with people from the same field.
Blog or read and reflect on what other bloggers write.
Grow steadily and continuously; look to do things differently.
