3. 3. The Organisation’s Carbon Challenge To reduce our organisation’s daily impact on the environment.... whilst maintaining focus and profitability . Then : Use best practice tools & techniques to optimise this in order to deliver :- THE BEST system for your customers THE BEST performance for you organisation THE BEST environmental solution Profitable Solutions WITH Environmental Benefit This starts with : Knowing your organisational needs
 4. 4. Why is Green IT a strategic concern? Global IT use pumps out around 2% of world carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, equivalent to aviation Industry * Server utilisation has dropped from 80% in 1980’s down to 10% at 2007 . Un Utilised Server Capacity now equates to 80 Million Tonnes CO2 , more than half of all South American Countries ** To date virtualisation solutions have saved about 36.9 billion kilowatt hours of electricity each year – equivalent to the electricity used for heating and cooling the entire country of Denmark *** * Gartner ** CITRIX *** VMWare
 5. 5. Why is Green IT a Corporate concern? Every server virtualized , can save about 7,000 kilowatt hours, or four tons of CO2 emissions every year, equivalent to 1.5 cars off the road. * A thin client (virtualised PC) generally uses around 30 Watts of electricity combined, or 25% of a standard desktop PC . *** 25% of energy bills are related to IT, yet 50% of respondents claimed that IT energy was not monitored because utility bills were the responsibility of the facilities department . * VMWare ** HP *** 2008 Green IT Survey Profitable Solutions WITH Environmental Benefit
 6. 6. How can Green Drivers Support the Business? Tesco has applied the latest virtualisation technology to mission critical systems running in its data centre to improve performance, cut costs and help fulfil its commitment to reduce its carbon emissions. The work not only represents a milestone in the retailer’s plans to virtualise its entire server infrastructure but has helped the company hit its target of reducing carbon emissions from its UK data centres by 20 per cent. May 2009
 7. 7. What is virtualisation? Data Center / Server

Reduce Space

Reduce Power

Reduce Maintenance Costs

Improve Supportability

Improve Availability

Improve Provisioning

Consolidate and Right Size

Reduce Costs

Reduce Power

Reduce License Costs

Improve Security

Improve Provisioning

Improve Supportability

Enable Hot Desk / Remote Working

Desktop VM VM APPS PROFILE OS Virtual Desktops Hardware User
 8. 8. The value of virtualisation Reduced Energy Consumption – up to 70% Reduce Carbon Footprint Green Reduce Energy Bills – up to 15% Reduced hardware spend – up to 50 % Reduced ongoing support costs – up to 50% Cash Improved employee productivity Improved supportability, resiliency and security Improve remote working and hot desk capabilities Operational
 9. 9.

Do you have a green IT action plan in place?

What % of your energy bill is related to IT?

- are your IT department engaged with facilities?

How many servers do you have, what is their current utilisation, are you already virtualised?

How many Desktop’s do you have, how much do they cost you now?

- what % of energy bills do they represent?

How do you plan to support increased remote working or “Hot Desk” requirements?

- are you happy with your data being carried around on laptops?

Key things to consider?
