What is Twitter?• Twitter is a social networking and microblogging service – Connect and communicate w/users in short, 140-character messages – Build followers/following – Receive quick messages & updates from followers in live news feed – Share your messages w/your followers• Service boasts 100+ million active users
  6. 6. Who uses Twitter?• Twitter users include – Experts – News outlets – Publications – Brands & businesses – Organizations – Schools – Celebrities – You, your friends, family & co-workers
  7. 7. What else can I do with Twitter?• Develop a Twitter presence to – Connect w/friends, family, experts – Tweet about what you know – Retweet information – Tweet articles – Use #hashtags to make Tweets searchable – Say less with more

Where do I start?• Get started – Sign up & choose a username (aka your handle) • @NorthwesternUCS – Upload a profile photo & develop a bio in 160 characters or less • UCS assists Northwestern students (undergraduate & graduate) & alumni with their career development needs & coordinates with employers seeking talent • Graduate Candidate @MedillIMC; Concentrations on Marketing Analysis, Interactive Marketing; More than 5- year Marketing Experience in China – Include a link to your website or blog – Choose to make your profile public or private

Who do I follow & who follows me?• Build your following and followers – Use the search bar to find & follow • Friends, family, experts, publications & more – Use the ‘who to follow’ link for more suggestions – Leverage current followers’ follow lists as a guide – Expect certain users you follow to return the favor • Especially if you know a user personally – Create lists to organize your followers & news feeds

How do I Tweet?• Start Tweeting – Compose messages (aka Tweets) in 140 characters or less • Share news articles, thoughts, advice – Tweet photos, files or video • Twitpic, Tweetafile, TwitVid – Engage in conversation using the @ symbol • @NorthwesternUCS: We’d love to see more career tips! – Mention (@twitterhandle) companies or people of influence when tweeting about topics relevant to them • MLK Career Fair today @NorrisCenter! – Can also help build following

How do I Tweet?• Start Tweeting – Add a keyword (aka #hashtag) to Tweets to make them searchable • MLK Fair today in @NorrisCenter! #Northwestern – Retweet other users’ Tweets to share w/followers • Use Retweet button • Copy and paste Tweet into your Tweet box w/RT preceding Tweet – RT @NorthwesternU: MLK Fair today in @NorrisCenter! • Use MT if Tweet has been modified – Shorten links w/bit.ly & track click-throughs – Use direct message to send a private message • Can only use DM if there is a mutual connection

LinkedIn in Review• Basic LinkedIn features – Sign up for basic v. premium account • Premium includes advanced search options, InMail – Complete profile • Summary, skills, work experience – Consider privacy settings • Can select “your connections only” or “you only” for maximum privacy – Join groups • Can be related to location, industry – Add articles – Start/contribute to discussion topics – Send messages to members

How do I use Pinterest?• Curate visual content – Use search bar to find pins from other users • Follow those you find interesting – Repin, like or comment on pins – Upload photos from your computer – Download pinmarklet • Pin photos directly from the web to your boards – Organize pins onto boards

Pinterest Reminders• Some concern re: pinning copyright content – Pinterest places copyright responsibility on users • Terms of use: users acknowledge and agree that they are solely responsible for the content that they pin – Most users pin and repin content that is not their own or that they do not have permission to pin
