    1. i design
    2. My name is Keith Moy. I am an Industrial Designer, and I love what I do. The pages in this book reflect my design process, and give insight to my skillset and styles.
    3. Objective: Deal with the problem of ‘Pull-Tie’ Dog Poo Project dog waste in an innovative way.
    4. Literary Research... Dog waste is a problem. S Roundworms If the person in control of the dog or cat is the owner of the property, this law does not apply. Violation of this section is punishable upon conviction by a fine of more than $500. Tapeworms Leptospira not less than $75 or Salmonellosis Parvo Virus Distemper remove A person in control of a dog or cat must promptly and dispose of, in a sanitary manner, feces left by Rabies their dog or cat, when walking outside of your own yard with E. coli their pet. diseases can be contracted from dog feces. Many in control Each person must be of the dog or cat and must have materials to remove feces left by their dog or cat when they are off their own property.
    5. Survey Results... House / Rural Apartment / Urban Pick up after dog - People that... Use scooper - bags - septic tank - shovel - $20 $10 Spent per month (avg.)-
    6. Survey Results... Bag Shovel Scooper Septic Tank One-time purchase Cheap / Free Eliminates smell One-time purchase Holds multiple ‘deposits’ Always available Dog waste practically Holds multiple ‘deposits’ disappears Good distance from deposit Easy to use Good distance from deposit when collecting Lasts for several years when collecting Fits in pocket / purse Expensive Bend-over to pick up Expensive Expensive Must clean after use Can feel poo through the Made for specific soil types Must clean after use bag Too heavy to use during a Must dig deep hole to Heavy dog walk leaves mess on sidewalk install Awkward angle when using can’t get it all off concrete Most bags are non- Requires frequent watering to pick up poo biodegradable and addition of enzymes
    7. Survey Results... Activities done while taking a dog outside Listening to Smoking Running / Getting the music Walking mail Reading Talking on Pushing baby phone stroller
    8. Basically... - People feel like it is a chore to pick up after a dog - People don’t like to spend much money on these products - The environment doesn’t need more trash - Poo on the sidewalk is difficult to remove Design Goal : - Solve the problem of dog waste by making the task of disposing it more fun. - Must be low-cost - Must be sustainable - Works on concrete
    9. Rolling Scooper Scoop, flip, and roll away. Scooper Suitcase Conceal your dirty scooper. Got-to-go box Template printed on paper grocery bags. Dog trained to poo on red dot when seen...
    10. The Cover-Up Press Bio-degradable box into the ground, covering the poo. When the box soaks up rain water, enzymes in box break down the dog waste. Designated Poo-Area Owner lets pet into enclosed hedge space to go to the bathroom. Space is maintained by apartment maintenance cerw. Outdoor Flushing Station For suburban / rural area. Station is installed, tapping onto existing sewage line from house. Dog waste is collected, as normal, by method of scooper, shovel, etc. Waste is placed into station, and then flushed down, similar to a regular toilet. Has a swinging lid attached to top to protect against rain, debris, tennis balls, etc.
    11. Planter Bio-degradable cloth with embedded seed is placed over dog waste at the time of the crime. Enzymes in cloth break down the waste and the moisture created provides the nutrients needed for the seed to grow into a plant. Walking Stick The plant growing from this cloth is a signature showing that a good samaritain has done their job... Light-weight scooper picks up dog waste, and then flips up to be used as a walking aid... instead of being a burden to carry. Dung Beetle Jar Dog Pack Saddle-bag hugs the dog, carrying dog treats and bags for waste pick-up. Make the dog carry it! Poo gets carried off...
    12. Actions Pull Pocket Uses a scissor action to pick poo up inside. Pocket sinches tight for carrying. Scooper Pocket Front flap scrapes under poo to assist into pocket. Front flap now seals pocket at the top.
    13. Disposable Apparel (chosen as final design direction) Bio-degradable clothing made from flat, recycled material. scarf Hooks around the waist.
    14. Structural connection to support pocket when full. Materials Testing

    17. The following four projects will briefly communicate some of the major skills and techniques I have acquired.
    18. Objective: Design an end table End Table for a home. Major skills earned: - Practical design - Concept development - Sketching - Illustration - Digital 3D modeling + rendering - Story Board/ Product use + context
    19. Possible veneer layering method for constructing the tabletop...
    20. Objective: Solve the issue of an ‘Sound’ undesireable space we encounter in Undesireable Space public. Major skills earned: - Concept development - Problem solving - Abstract thinking - Sketching/ Illustration - Photoshop rendering/ illustration - Model making + testing - Ergonomics - Vector graphics - Technology exploration - Digital 3D modeling/ rendering - Storyboard/ product use + context
    21. NOISE TION POLLU
    22. t t Brain Brain Cochlea Cochlea Ear Drum Ear Drum Bone Bone Sound Sound Source Source Bone Conduction Hearing by means of bone vibration... Hearing by means of air wave vibrations... What Bone Conduction is and how it works... When physical vibrations are applied to certain “bony landmarks” on the human head, they pass into the skull, to the cochlea, and into the brain, interpreted as sounds. The whole process bypasses the eardrum altogether, and the sounds that are created can only be heard by the user that is coming in contact with the vibration source. This is an excellent form of sound isolation in any environment, which also allows for sounds to be heard through the air ( if someone was to call attention to the user) . Temple Vertex There are several landmarks on the head where bone vibration can be observed, but some are more effective with carrying sounds to the Condylaris brain Mandibulae Mastoid -directly behind the ear
    23. Some waiting rooms will play music using overhead speakers/ surrounding speakers for the visitors while they wait their turn. The purpose of this is to keep the visitors entertained while they wait. This is fine, except certain visitors may not enjoy the particular music being played, or who just wish to wait in silence. As a result, the intended “entertainment” actually becomes noise pollution... a form of Environment: THE WAITING ROOM Bone Vibration (Embedded in headrest) Module What Bone Vibration is and how it works... Results from usability testing + interviews + - Used fingernails to pry open ring Attaching and detaching keys is - Really hurt my fingers and fingernails - Used fingernails to pry open ring + - Hard to get thicker keys on/ off = time-consuming, and even + - Used fingernails to pry open ring painful for users - Very painful - Thicker keys harder to put on - Very painful - Opening the ring is time-consuming - Shirt in the way + - Gets caught while trying to remove - Keys swing around, annoying - Hard to get off - annoying sound from swinging - Risk of keychain coming off clip - Annoying swinging, hitting leg - having something hanging outside swing while walking and things pants, worried about hitting some- = Things that + thing/ getting snagged. - Keys swing around too much, that snag are annoying. annoying - Gets caught on strap - don’t like swinging, hitting things, getting snagged + - Discomfort from extra bulk + - Since it’s isolated, easier to get - Harder to put keys in pocket without to/ grab falling out - no bulk in pocket - Have to feel around - Keys scratch phone - Pants are tighter Users like isolation of + - Don’t want to scratch phone - Easy to grab keys, no obstructions = keys... it eliminates fumbling/ search- - No obstructions/ confusions when - Worried about scratching phone reaching into pocket - more bulk/ tighter pants - fumbling Based on user’s needs... ing, reduces bulk and clutter, and - accidentally pulled phone out with keys prevents damage to delicate devices such Design solution must: as phones and mp3 players Not cause pain, fatigue, or annoyance ...be safe around sensitive electronics ...be quick to access with least process
    35. Different way of unlocking
    36. The last project in this book reflects my ability to look at design in a different way; an ability that is close to my heart.
    37. Objective: Design an object that ‘Hunger’ represents time in some way, by means Time Project of a symbol, metaphor, or analogy.
    38. Brainstorming and research focused on thinking about time in a new and original way. A few of the first thoughts are emphasized in the following research images: Study habits / Solar/Lunar patterns Clouds/Precipitation Procrastination Over time, the sun and moon seem The movement of moisture from the to dance across the sky, in sort of a sky, to the earth, and back is a never Projects are assigned for certain dates, game to catch eachother - which they ending cycle - and the clouds formed by but somehow, it seems we can never do every so often when a solar/lunar this are in constant change. They never complete our tasks on time. Perhaps eclipse happens. create the same form more than once. there is a way to fix this problem. Changing energy levels Drinking habits Growing/cutting hair (Most) people have a set sleeping Alcoholic consumption is a linear Hair is in constant growth, even after it’s schedule in which they follow (sometimes cyclical) process which been cut. Some people choose to cut throughout the week - sleep at night, involves several levels of intoxication, it the same length every so often, and awake during the day. Some people from completely comprehensive, to some people cut it different lengths have a very inconsistent schedule and completely passed out. over different periods of time. have trouble sleeping enough and waking at the right time.
    39. Looking at sleeping cycles... Time can be defined as the order in which certain events in our lives take place. Some happen before others. Some occur longer than others. There are gaps in-between events, and some events overlap others, where multi- tasking comes into place. Eating cycles Seasonal changes Music Throughout the year, plants appear to Without time, music could never exist. All living things must eat to survive. die and (spring) back to life. Leaves are There would be no way of keeping a Hunger sets in, the person eats, lost, and re-grown. consistent beat and no way of creating becomes full, and later becomes hungry repetition and patterns. Time and music again. have a clear, mathematical relationship.

    43. white silicone shell Final Design Polypropylene backplate AC power cord Between mealtimes (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), the outer shell gradually sucks in, imitating a hungry stomach, and turns red to catch your attention and remind you it’s time to eat. A few minutes later, the shape pops back out and turns blue again, as if it is happy and full. (Full and happy) (Time to eat!!!)
    44. Those of us that live very busy lives at home or at work can get so occupied in our activities that we forget to eat as often as we should. the object will be mounted about 6-8 feet high on the wall, facing down towards the viewers. A simple reminder to get out and eat!
    45. Thank You.
