    2. Foreshadowing
      • A literary techinque used to provide clues about the plot in order that the viewer can predict what might occur later in the story.
      • What foreshadowing do we see at the beginning of the movie?
    3. Foreshadowing
      • Hunk – “You ain’t using your head about Miss Gulch. It seems like you didn’t have any brains at all… You’re head ain’t made of straw you know.”
      • Zeke – “She ain’t nothing to be afraid of. Have a little courage that’s all. Walk right up to her and spit in her eye. That’s what I’d do.”
      • Hickory – “Someday they’re going to erect a statue to me in this town.”
    4. Plot Sequence
      • Introduction – The characters and setting are introduced.
      • Rising Action – The plot begins to develop.
      • Conflict – Suspense builds as the characters are faced with adversity.
      • Climax – The conflict has reached its highest point. Often times the most exciting or important part of the story.
      • Falling Action – The characters get closer to solving the conflict.
      • Resolution – The conflict is resolved and the story concludes.
    5. Plot Sequence
      • Dorothy kills the Witch and returns her broomstick to the Wizard of Oz.
      • Dorothy is on her farm in Kansas. She is upset because no one will listen to her.
      • Dorothy is captured by the Witch and the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion try to rescue her.
      • Dorothy is able to return home and her friends receive gifts from the Wizard.
      • In order to get home, Dorothy must find the Wizard of Oz while being followed by the Wicked Witch.
      • Dorothy finds herself in the strange, new Land of Oz.
    6. Discussion Questions
      • What did the Wizard of Oz give to the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion? Do you think these gifts were important? Why?
        • Did the Scarecrow prove he was smart before getting the Wizard’s gift? How?
        • Did the Tin Man prove he had a heart before getting the Wizard’s gift? How?
        • Did the Cowardly Lion prove he had courage before getting the Wizard’s gift? How?
      • How was Dorothy able to return home to Kansas?
      • Explain Dorothy’s quotes:
      • “ There’s no place like home.”
      • “ I think that it wasn’t enough just to want to see Uncle Henry and Auntie Em. And it’s that if I ever go looking for my heart’s desire again, I won’t look any further than my own back yard because if it isn’t there I never really lost it to begin with.”
    7. Movie Review
      • Being able to effectively write a movie review will be an important part of this class. It will be crucial for you to include each of these elements when composing a review of a movie that we view in class.
      • Give a brief summary of the film’s plot. Be sure and include details about the setting and time period (if applicable).
      • Identify important characters in the film. Were there any characters you particularly identified with?
      • What were the major themes of the movie? Can you learn anything from these themes?
      • Describe the cinematography of the movie. Give details about how well the movie was filmed and directed.
      • Since this is YOUR movie review, be sure to offer YOUR opinion of the movie. Why did you like it? Why did you not like it?
