What is Intelligence ? <ul><li>Learning from experience </li></ul><ul><li>To reason well </li></ul><ul><li>To cope effectively with the demands of daily living </li></ul><ul><li>In one view intelligence is one single general factor however there are psychologists that have argued that there is more than one general factor but many . </li></ul>
  3. 3. Theories Of Intelligence <ul><li>Charles Spearman believed there was a g factor or general intelligence factor. Spearman concluded this theory by a series of intelligence tests and the scores to support but do not fully prove his theory. </li></ul><ul><li>Howard Gardner argued that there was not just one general intelligence factor but multiple ones. Gardner states that there are eight independent types of intelligence: </li></ul>

Eight Independent Types of Intelligence <ul><li>Linguistic (verbal) </li></ul><ul><li>Logical-mathematical </li></ul><ul><li>Musical </li></ul><ul><li>spatial (artistic) </li></ul><ul><li>kinesthetic (athletic) </li></ul><ul><li>interpersonal (social skills) </li></ul><ul><li>intrapersonal (personal adjustment) </li></ul><ul><li>naturalistic intelligence (understanding nature) </li></ul>

Can Intelligence be Measured? <ul><li>Alfred Binet composed the first IQ Test </li></ul><ul><li>Binet's IQ test was then refined into The Stanford-Binet Intelligence Test </li></ul><ul><li>David Wechsler developed two scales to measure intelligence one for children and one for adults </li></ul><ul><li>Deviation IQ </li></ul><ul><li>Ratio IQ </li></ul>

Characteristics of a Good Intelligence Test <ul><li>Standardization administered the same way to a group of individuals </li></ul><ul><li>Norms comparing individuals score with others </li></ul><ul><li>Objectivity must be constructed to determine what constitutes a correct answer </li></ul><ul><li>Reliability is it useful? To determine, if the test was given on two different occasions to different people the outcome of scores should be similar from the first time </li></ul><ul><li>Validity Does the test measure what it is said to measure </li></ul>
