  3. 3. Take an Active Approach – Before You Read<br />Positive attitude.<br />Find a place to study.<br />Identify distractions and eliminate them to improve concentration and comprehension.<br /><ul><li>Determine purpose for reading (author, instructor, student).

  5. 5. Dedicate time to study – hours outside of class.</li></ul>Get prepared:<br />Textbook<br />Paper<br />Pen/pencil/highlighter<br />Dictionary<br />

During Reading Note-taking Techniques<br />Highlighting & Marking – read first to avoid over-highlighting & use system of markings with symbols<br />Summarizing – use your own words to retell key points in brief statements<br />Mapping – visual diagram using shapes and lines<br />Outlining – Roman numerals, letters, and numbers system using your own short phrases and/or words.<br />Note-taking – Cornell Method<br />
  7. 7. Let’s give it a try!<br /> The Maglevs are coming. Not aliens from outer space, but superfast trains suspended in the air and propelled by magnetic force. Maglevs can travel at speeds of more than 300 miles per hour, lifted off the ground on a cushion formed by magnetic forces and pulled forward by magnets. They run more quietly and smoothly and can climb steeper grades than conventional trains can. Maglevs are more energy efficient, have lower maintenance costs, and require fewer staff than does comparable transportation. However, given the high cost of construction, the concept may not prove viable.<br />-Guide to College Reading, 9th ed. , chapter 10, p. 353<br />

  9. 9. BDA Technique – SQ3R<br />Survey: Preview the chapter, subheadings, graphics, etc.<br />Question: What do you want to know about the topic? Write questions using subheadings.<br />Read: Focus on your written questions and finding main ideas.<br />Recite: Stop and answer your questions aloud or by writing in your own words.<br />Review: Immediately and periodically.<br />
