    • In French, there are 3 ways to ask a simple question requiring a yes or no answer
    • How would you ask “Do you like apples?”

  • 3. Yes/No Questions
    • 3 ways
    • 1 most informal – Rising Intonation
    • 2 informal - Est-ce que
    • 3 most formal - Inversion
  • 4. Rising intonation
    • Make a statement, but make it sound like a question by making your voice go higher at the end of the sentence.
    • Tu as un animal à la maison?
    • Il fait froid aujourd’hui?
    • Il mange du fromage?
    • Paul est arrivé?
  • 5. Est-ce que
    • Put Est-ce que (qu’) = is it that? at the beginning. Your voice will also go up at the end.
    • Est-ce que tu as un animal à la maison?
    • Est-ce qu’il fait froid aujourd’hui?
    • Est-ce qu’il mange du fromage?
    • Est-ce que Paul est arrivé?
  • 6. Inversion
    • turn round the verb and subject pronoun. Voice also goes up at the end.
    • As-tu un animal à la maison?
    • Fait-il froid aujourd’hui?
    • Mange-t-il du fromage?
    • Trickier if the subject is a noun.
    • Paul, est-il arrivé?
  • 7. All of these mean the same
    • Tu as un animal à la maison?
    • Est-ce que tu as un animal à la maison?
    • As-tu un animal à la maison?
  • 8. Is it cold today?
    • Est-ce qu’il fait froid aujourd’hui?
    • Fait-il froid aujourd’hui?
    • Il fait froid aujourd’hui?
    • Which is the most formal?
