  1. “After the Silence” Opportunity “After the Silence” The Courage to Stand Up Against Domestic Abuse Will you be the voice that makes it possible to begin the end to the cycle of domestic violence? Created in conjunction with Health Presentations, a 501c3 charitable corporation, Jon Theuerkauf of Credit Suisse Bank, Denise Berger and Tony Valenziano. Health Presentations scientific studies are part of HP ACE Studies which includes the science and research necessary to end the cycle of domestic violence and abuse. Page 1 of 18
  2. “After the Silence” Opportunity The Beginning to the End of the Cycle of Domestic Violence and Abuse integrating Education, Inspiration and Art. Approximately 1,400 women a year – four every day – die in the United States as a result of domestic violence. And 132,000 women report that they have been victims of a rape or attempted rape, and it is estimated that an even greater number have been raped, but do not report it. One in four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime. Family violence accounted for 11 percent of all violence between 1998 and 2002. It is time to begin the end to the cycle of domestic violence. It is time to educate those we love to pre-qualify love. As we so successfully stymied the tobacco industry so will we with domestic violence. Page 2 of 18
  3. “After the Silence” Opportunity BUSINESS OVERVIEW AND INDUSTRY TRENDS On average, four people in the United States die daily from child abuse and neglect.1 Domestic violence has reached epidemic proportions and become an international priority. The direct and indirect costs of domestic violence are now estimated at $24.4 billion per year in the United States alone—and are growing. Dr. Lee Jong-wook, former Director-General of the World Health organization (WHO) reported on a landmark, international study (2005), saying,” This study shows that women are more at risk from violence at home than in the street and this has serious repercussions for women's health…the study also shows how important it is to shine a spotlight on domestic violence globally and treat it as a major public health issue.2 According to the WHO Violence Prevention Report of August 21, 2007: Violence is a major obstacle to health and development, but as Nelson Mandela said in the foreword to the World report on violence and health, \"Violence can be prevented. Violent cultures can be turned around … Governments, communities and individuals can make a difference\". As well as increased awareness that violence is preventable, notable achievements of the first 5 years of the Global Campaign for Violence Prevention…include consolidating and disseminating normative guidance on how to prevent violence; carving a niche within government health ministries for focal persons to 1 Department of Health and Human Services report titled “Child Maltreatment 2005”. 2005 is the latest year for which national child maltreatment statistics are available. This report is available by calling the Child Welfare Information Gateway at (800) FYI-3366 or on the Internet. 2 http://www.who.int/mediacentre/news/releases/2005/pr62/en/index.html Page 3 of 18
  4. “After the Silence” Opportunity promote violence prevention; and taking stock of the scale and nature of the violence problem and the responses to it. At the individual level, tens of thousands of people in scores of countries have been touched by violence prevention programs and thousands of victims have been helped to cope with the aftermath of their experience through services established as part of the Global Campaign for Violence Prevention. In other words, intervention in the form of individual and local efforts, works! Studies such as the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study3 have proven that traumatized children bring long-term, negative consequences resulting from maltreatment into their adulthood. ACEs are now internationally considered to be the threshold to some of the leading causes of premature death in adult populations. While scientific research is necessary to substantiate the realities of domestic violence, nothing brings that information to light more clearly than the faces and voices of those of us who have survived. By standing up in public forums and speaking the truths of our lived histories, we educate and empower others to do the same. We thereby break the cycle of abuse and neglect that allow this global epidemic to flourish. We are the faces and voices of hope. Health Presentations is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt, non-profit organization. We administer three major programs, all of which have a common goal: To globally diminish domestic violence and its long-term, negative health and social consequences. Health Presentations has the following programs available for You, should they choose to use them THE ADVERSE CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCES (ACE) STUDY OUTREACH PROGRAM – The ACE Study is collaboration between scientists from Kaiser Permanente in Southern California and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia. Scientists are analyzing the data collected from over 17,000 adult Kaiser patients. The findings are stunning; they indicate that not only are child abuse and neglect very common at all socio-economic strata, but the long-term behavioral and 3 http://acestudy.org Page 4 of 18
  5. “After the Silence” Opportunity health consequences underlie the most common causes of premature death. Over 50 peer-reviewed papers have been published as a result of the Study, which has gained international acclaim and interest. ACE Reporter is the quarterly newsletter produced by Health Presentations, which digests ACE Study findings and makes them readily available to people of all walks of life via http://acestudy.org. HEALTH PRESENTATIONS HAS COMPILED A GROUP OF AUTHENTIC VOICES, a grassroots group of over 20,000 survivors of domestic violence, and those who care for them has been established to include as part of After the Silence. Originally established by Children’s Hospital of San Diego, these survivors will be available and willing to provide live presentations, peer-support, policy advising, program development, best practices information, and educational workshops. “After the Silence Series” is a highly specialized outreach effort designed by Kathryn Keats. AFTER THE SILENCE - The Opportunity “After the Silence Series” is the brainchild of Kathryn Keats After the Silence is a series of events featuring speakers who are artists from all mediums, celebrities included, who have overcome their own histories of being treated violently. They will share their most private stories, illustrating them through their media of choice (e.g. film, painting, music) to educate and inspire audiences to become active in efforts to begin the end of the cycle of domestic violence. Educators will hold seminars and a celebratory concert will end each series. Kathryn Keats and celebrity contributors will provide press and meetings with safe houses, schools and governmental officials. Every effort will be made to engage qualified artists who are local to the regions where each After the Silence Series is happening. As each keynote speaker integrates his own art in each keynote our audiences will experience the world of domestic violence in a way that has never been done. The ability to speak through art in undeniably effective and is the perfect tool to take into to educational institutions. http://www.kathrynkeats.com Page 5 of 18
  6. “After the Silence” Opportunity http://www.members.soundclick.com/kathrynkeats http://www.sonicbids.com/kathrynkeats Market Opportunity While every year there are dozens of conferences related to domestic violence issues, held all over the world, most of these are available only to professionals who are either members of the sponsoring organizations, or who pay a premium to attend without membership. Even at such professional conferences, it is rare to hear adult survivors speak directly to the audiences assembled. Kathryn Keats has directly experienced a growing demand for information related to domestic violence. This demand is increasingly originating from professionals, corporations and from individual family members who are seeking guidance and resources for healing. What we are proposing is a unique series of events that are not restricted to professionals, that are in fact geared to community attendance, thereby reaching the very people who most need the information we offer—parents, children—families and the communities that raise our children. We will educate to pre-qualify love in order to begin the end of the cycle of domestic violence and abuse. We therefore propose a day filled with fun, lively, engaging informational/educational sessions and materials. This will be followed by an evening with a keynote speaker from the arts that will integrate his/her chosen medium to communicate her story. A live-entertainment musical concert – a celebration of hope…a party to celebrate our achievements as educators, doctors, legal workers, social workers, businesses, sponsors, media and--more importantly, family and friends of survivors and those who did not, who are committed to make community-level progress toward ending the cycle of domestic abuse and violence. The Established Brand-Sponsor We invite You to be our primary brand sponsor. We will work closely with you to offer every possible sponsor advantage. A highly regarded team of professionals will be assembled to implement Page 6 of 18
  7. “After the Silence” Opportunity a media blitz in each city where an After the Silence Series event is scheduled to occur. This will begin 6 months before each event. Every reasonable marketing tool will be used, including the Internet, radio, and public service announcements by celebrities and survivors. Spots on local and national television will be incorporated into regular shows that appeal to family markets. Celebrities will be engaged to participate in all aspects of the series. This includes well-known doctors, authors, artists, athletes, and musicians. Kathryn Keats will be the frontline spokes person throughout the entire marketing round representing the series as the person who gave a face to domestic violence in the criminal justice system. All proceeds from Ms. Keats created materials for the series will return directly back to the AFT Series and Health Presentations to support After the Silence Series and the ongoing research and educational advances of Health Presentations, in support of the After the Silence and Adverse Childhood Experiences Study programs. These materials will include music and literature with celebrity collaboration, DVDs, audio books, art prints and such. Artists will be required to formally grant permission for this purpose. This will be the case with any and all materials created for the series by celebrities and non-celebrities alike. Music and visual media will be an integral part of the marketing strategy for the AFT Series, including an ongoing musical campaign to strengthen our ability to communicate our message and guarantee that young generations are reached in all efforts to bring an end to the cycle of domestic violence and abuse. 17. “After the Silence” Opportunity A Plea from Kathryn Keats We must begin to educate our children, our nieces, our sons, our grandchildren, our friends, and our communities, to pre-qualify love. We must begin to teach our children, from a very early age, to find out whom they are letting into their lives and their hearts. We must begin to pre-qualify love as adults. We must commit to ask questions and communicate with one another and the parents and friends of our young. If we provide tools and time for this education, on an ongoing basis, much like the system of education we provide about the use of condoms, the use of tobacco, we will begin to see a decline in the horrific numbers of cases of domestic abuse and violence. And we will, with this education, begin to see who is at risk for violent behavior and to understand the circumstances about why their behavior exists. We will be able to begin to heal people who are abused, potential abusers or dangerously mentally ill. If we teach people to pre-qualify love we will save many from going through both sides of this hell. And with that we will save families and loved ones from unbearable pain and the feeling of helplessness. It is time we begin to end the cycle of domestic abuse and violence as well as the horrific cycle of mental illness and character structures that lead people to be abusers. This can be done. And it is up to you, to me, to make sure it is accomplished. One in four women are battered. One in three children neglected. Page 17 of 18
  18. “After the Silence” Opportunity How many young people are at risk and have to end up as abusers, victims, mentally ill, or dead in order for a wide spread educational program to be put into place, beginning with grade schools? How many more shows do we need to see about a dead woman, a dead child, a mentally ill man, and a murdered family? How many times are we going to miss the boy, who at 12, begins to feel paranoid, feel suicidal, hear voices, and then tries to self medicate with weed, in order to feel normal, only to begin the cycle of unwarranted agony and violence? I ask you to answer these questions. I beg you to begin speaking out now. If we teach people how to pre-qualify love, vast numbers of these people can and will be saved from a horrific life or death. If we can cover a penis with a condom and save lives, if we can spread the word in effective campaigns about lung cancer, stopping thousands of kids from wanting to smoke, can we not educate our children to find out, ask questions, get answers, from the kids they begin to hang out with, in order to pre- qualify love? Can we not provide tools for one another so violence and pain and loss of life are diminished? We can save people from living in a hell I know too much about. It is time. We have begun. Talk to your kids, your employer, your parents, and if you think someone is in trouble, stick your nose in their business. You might just save a life. Kathryn Keats Page 18 of 18
