  • 49. Maud Lewis likely led a hardscrabble life in her tiny home located at the roadside in Marshalltown, Digby County. Physically challenged by birth defects and arthritis, she saw very little monetary reward during her lifetime. Nonetheless, her work depicts a sunny view of the world. In 1965, Maud was introduced to an international audience when President Richard Nixon commissioned two pieces for the White House. She was asked to be paid up front. Perhaps best known for paintings of horse-drawn sleighs and the animal life she observed from her windows, this atypical scene depicts picturesque Smith’s Cove, Digby County.
