Checklist for Evaluating Research Articles<br />This presentation focuses on:<br />What to do when you have to start making meaning from your research<br />And<br /> How to make meaning while making the most of your time.<br />Developed from material offered in Pryczak, F. (2005) Evaluating Research in Academic Journals, Pryczak Publishing. <br />
  2. 2. Some steps for evaluation:<br />Look at the Title<br /> 1. Is it specific? <br /> 2. Is it concise?<br /> 3. Does it refer to primary variables?<br /> 4. Are types of participants mentioned?<br /> 5. Is underlying theory mentioned?<br /> 6. Is nature of research listed?<br /> 7. Is it effective in helping you to understand what you are about to read?<br />
  3. 3. Look at the Abstract <br /> 1. Is purpose clearly stated?<br /> 2. Is methodology given in sufficient detail?<br /> 3. Is the sample mentioned?<br /> 4. Is there a brief summary of the results?<br /> 5. Is it effective and appropriate?<br />
  4. 4. Look at the Introduction<br />1. Does it begin to describe the specific problem area?<br /> 2. Is importance of problem discussed and backed by statistics?<br /> 3. Are underlying theories described?<br /> 4. Are logical arguments made in logical progression?<br /> 5. Are conceptual definitions for key variables given?<br /> 6. Are all facts cited?<br /> 7. Does it leave you with an understanding of the problem?<br />
  5. 5. Look at the Literature Review<br />1. Is there a literature review?<br /> 2. Does it cover all sides of the issue (offer many solutions)?<br /> 3. Is research cited current (within 5years of the articles publication date)?<br /> 4. Are research findings interpreted in light of the limits of empirical research?<br /> 5. Are there few to no direct quotes?<br /> 6. Does the review lead logically to a hypothesis or research question?<br />
  6. 6. Look at the Samples <br />1. Is type of sample stated?<br /> 2. Are procedures for sample selection listed?<br /> 3. Is exact sample size mentioned?<br /> 4. Is sample described in sufficient detail that it could be duplicated?<br /> 5. Has informed consent been secured?<br /> 6. Does sample type and size make sense for the purpose of the research?<br />
  7. 7. Look at the Instruments <br />1. Have actual items or questions (or sample of them) been provided?<br /> 2. Does research describe how instrument is used (settings, protocols, etc. )<br /> 3. Is there more than one instrument for gathering data?<br /> 4. Have sources of existing instruments been provided?<br /> 5. Is reliability of instrument/s discussed?<br /> 6. Is validity of instrument/s discussed?<br /> 7. Are limitations of instrument/s discussed?<br />
  8. 8. Look at the Methods <br /> 1. Has method for collecting data been clearly stated (qualtitative/quantitative: experimental, descriptive, exploratory, program evaluation) using surveys, interviews, observations, etc.?<br /> 2. If data gathered by someone other than researcher, was there training?<br /> 3. Was setting “natural” or “artificial”?<br /> 4. Where human subjects protected?<br /> 5. Overall, was method described in sufficient detail to duplicate?<br />
  9. 9. Look at the Analysis <br /> 1. Are procedures clearly stated?<br /> 2. Have test criteria been respected?<br /> 3. Have any problems with analysis been stated?<br />
  10. 10. Look at the Report or the Results<br />1. Was information given in text, tables, or both?<br /> 2. Was information easily understood or were sufficient explanations given?<br /> 3. Do results answer the research question or prove/disprove hypothesis?<br /> 4. Do results stick to the findings and refrain from theorizing why they appear as they do?<br />
  11. 11. Look at the Discussion or Implications<br />1. Are limitations discussed?<br /> 2. Does discussion tie back to Literature Review?<br /> 3. If predicted results were not found, is an explanation/s offered?<br /> 4. Are specific implications for practice, policy, and future research made?<br />
