Gsm based campus display system

  1. 1. GSM-based Campus Display System AbstractIn the last couple of decades, communication technology hasdeveloped by leaps and bounds. It has already established itsimportance in sharing the information right from household matters toworldwide phenomena. Apart from sharing information, it is also usedfor remote control of machines and electronic appliances. In our day-to-day life, we use many such appliances at home, office and publicplaces for our comfort and convenience. Every device requires one orthe other kind of operation control for which it has a HMI (human-machine interface).Communication technology not only helps us to exchangeinformation with human beings but also allows us to carry outmonitoring and controlling of machines from remote locations. Thisremote control of appliances is possible with wired or wirelesscommunication interfaces embedded in the machines. The use of“Embedded System in Communication” has given rise to manyinteresting applications. One of such applications is public addressingsystem (PAS). Many companies are manufacturing audio / videosystems like public announcement system, CCTV, programmable signboards etc. But all these systems are generally hard-wired, complex innature and difficult to expand. So, by adding wireless communicationinterface such as GSM to these systems, we can overcome theirlimitations.
  2. 2. IntroductionThe Campus Display System is aimed at the colleges and universitiesfor displaying day-to-day information continuously or at regularintervals during the working hours. Being GSM-based system, itoffers flexibility to display flash news or announcements faster thanthe programmable system. GSM-based campus display system canalso be used at other public places like schools, hospitals, railwaystations, gardens etc. without affecting the surrounding environment. The CDS mainly consists of a GSM receiver and a display toolkitwhich can be programmed from an authorized mobile phone. Itreceives the SMS, validates the sending Mobile Identification Number(MIN) and displays the desired information after necessary codeconversion. It can serve as an electronic notice board and display theimportant notices instantaneously thus avoiding the latency. Beingwireless, the GSM based CDS is easy to expand and allows the userto add more display units at anytime and at any location in the campusdepending on the requirement of the institute. This system uses thefollowing components.MicrocontrollerCDS is based on AT89S52 microcontroller which is a variant of 8052.It is an 8-bit microcontroller with 8KB on-chip Flash memory, 256bytes RAM, three timer / counters, one serial and four 8-bit parallel
  3. 3. ports. It can also address up to 64KB of external data memory RAMand program memory.LCDThe GSM based CDS uses HD44780 LCD for displaying the textdata. It is 20 character x 2 line display module. But in practice, itshould be replace by the large multiline, multi-colour commercialdisplay units.GSM ModemA GSM modem is a wireless modem that works with a GSM wirelessnetwork. A wireless modem behaves like a dial-up modem. The maindifference between them is that a dial-up modem sends and receivesdata through a fixed telephone line while a wireless modem sends andreceives data through radio waves. Like a GSM mobile phone, a GSMmodem requires a SIM card in order to operate. In this project, we must take into account the fact that the modemrequires a wired connection at one end and wireless at the other.Matrix Simado GDT11 is a Fixed Cellular Terminal (FCT) for dataapplications. It is a compact and portable terminal that can satisfyvarious data communication needs over GSM. It can be connected toa computer with the help of a standard RS232C serial port. SimadoGDT11 offers features like Short Message Services (SMS), Data
  4. 4. Services (sending and receiving data files), Fax Services and WebBrowsing. The Simado GDT11 is easy to set up.Computers use AT commands to control modems. Both GSMmodems and dial-up modems support a common set of standard ATcommands. GSM modem can be used just like a dial-up modem. Inaddition to the standard AT commands, GSM modems support anextended set of AT commands. These extended AT commands aredefined in the GSM.Computer InterfaceFinally, this project uses RS232 serial interface for interfacing theGSM modem with a PC. This interface is used to setup the GSMmodem. A hyper terminal application is used to issue AT commandsto the GSM modem.
